Who's made it through DC Snowpocalypse?

So who else had to ride through this? Got called into work at 9pm on Fri,still at work now. Hoping to leave tonight. My normal 25min commute was like an hour 15min. Was running 2" studded Nashbar/Kendas. Knobs are kinda close together,so they were only ok for the deeper snow(of course,I just ordered a set of Nokias from AE Bike's Daily Deal, should've had 'em FedExed ). Stuck to the main roads and sidewalks and it wasn't too bad, just really tiring. Worst part was the snow soaked my jeans, should've worn the rain pants(thank you Patagonia for your wool long johns ).

Anyone else have to commute through this? How was it? Lessons learned?

I had to be at work last night at 10 pm. At that time, the roads were pretty passable, with maybe 1" or two on the ground; for the most part, the plows were already out. So it wasn't a problem for the nokian's I have. I was only worried about the way back home. Coming back, I crapped out & took the train (which was 1/2 hour late). Shouldda biked back, the roads were kinda passable around here, plus my bikes' still at work - I'd have to take the train into work, which only leaves me with another 3/4 mile to walk, in order to get my bike.

BTW measured at 2pm in southern Philadelphia - 17 ".

You want pictures?

We got 29.5 inches in Glen Burnie, MD as of 12PM. It stopped snowing around 4PM.

If someone wants to clue me in on some HTML, I'll try to fix the formatting a little. Sorry about that.

I rode home at 5pm Friday. There was two inches of slush / packed snow on the roads. Apart from the snow stinging when it hit my cheeks the ride was fine. If I go to work Monday or Tuesday I'll probably have to take my cross bike w/studded tires out to the main road. My street hasn't been plowed and the car wouldn't make it out.

Rode home midafternoon Friday - inch or 2 of new snow, no problems with 700x35 studded cross tires (prefer to use W&OD for part of my route). We'll have to see about Monday - my street has SUV ruts, main road thru subdivision may have been plowed (will check tomorrow). Could push or carry commuter to the theoretically plowed road and go from there. Not anxious enough (yet) to dig out completely and try our XL7 (4WD but street tires not best for deep snow).

Went for a 2.5 hour training ride in the snow =) Used 35mm speedmax tires (29psi rear/25 psi front) on my cross bike. Good fun. Just couldn't ride the parts where the cranks got buried in the snow.

I tried riding my MTB down the street yesterday. Hopefully it was the stupidest decision I'll make this week.

Maybe if I actually needed to travel any distance by bike on snow n' slush n' ice, I would have gotten some studded winter tires. But, nah -- walking can get me everywhere I need to go.

Normally I laugh when I watch the news and hear about how 2" to 6" of snow has caused DC to come to a grinding halt... 2 feet of snow now that is some REAL snow fall. Good luck to all of you out there. We may just shrug off 2 feet of snow in the Buffalo area, but we have LOADS of snow plows as we have to deal with it regularly. I hope you get a thaw to help melt some of if from the side steets. Otherwise I'd imaging that it will take well over a week to get some of those steets plowed. I live in the burbs and we see the plow every few hours during some serious snow, but I know parts of the inner city take a lot longer to get plowed. Stay warm and safe, but enjoy the beautify white stuff outside.

Happy riding,
André

We had 2 feet plus in the Philly area as well.

The roads were pretty clear today, but there were a few sections and back streets where it was still pretty dicey.

We're expected to get another 8-12" for Tuesday into Wednesday!

I am so ready for spring!

Let's hope it's not a repeat of the winter of '96. I remember it well. A nor'easter dumped over a feet of snow in D.C. and almost 2 feet of snow on various suburbs (including the area I lived) on the first Saturday of January. Then two more snow storms passed through within the next week (Wednesday and Friday), just as road crews had begun to make progress on the clearing the snow from the nor'easter. The second storm dumped another 6 inches in D.C. (this time the burbs got hit less hard). The third storm that moved through on Friday dumped another 5-12 inches.

you'd be surprised how low you can get the pressure with clinchers as long as the pressure stays constant. people race cyclocross at 30psi all the time.

Clinchers. In a race, I would probably ride those at higher psi. I only bottomed out once; the snow itself absorbed all of the impact. There's not enough traction to roll the tire off the rim.

HAha, I hate snow so much. I am not excited for the snow coming tomorrow and wednesday. If you had to shovel as much snow as I did, you'd feel the same way.

I live in a cul-de-sac and being the oldest son still living in the house, guess who had to do the bulk of the shoveling?

On the positive side, my bike has been shipped by Bike Friday. Hopefully the snow on wednesday doesn't interfere with shipping. Or I really might leave the state.

Some people would love to buy the world a Coke. I would like to buy everyone in the DC area one of these:

Of course I would have to buy myself one first, so I'm afraid you're all going to have to wait.
