Most of my commuting over the past fifve years has been done on my Kuwahara Shasta, Kuwahara Cascade, and my Peugeot fixed gear conversion which was a fair weather bike while the Kuwaharas were and continue to be all weather machines and the Pug is retired.
My go to bike is my Shasta which was a fixed gear Urban Assault Vehicle, then a three speed, and is now an 18 speed to give it the needed range to tow my trailer.

My Puma Nevis, I believe it would classify as a hybrid. I'm slowly adding things to it, like my rear rack & trunk bag. I plan on changing the front fork (shock) & getting big apple tires. Also, I'll eventually get a igh installed,...thinking 8 speed nexus or nuvinci 360.

I have two bikes. One is an early 80's Trek 510, steel frame and moustache bars and downtube shifters. With nice big 32's it rides great on a sunny day.
My other is an aluminum bikesdirect cyclocross bike that I converted into a 1x9 set up. I kind of view the cyclocross bike as my constant. I don't mind riding it in sloppy weather. It has brifters. It has interupter brake levers. It's got high spoke count wheels with 28 tires. Slightly lighter, but not by much.
Riding the Trek is a treat/ change of pace. The Motobecane is the default.

It all depends on the commute, not the bike.
• When I commuted in the desert, a 10 speed road bike was best, it handled the nearly flat terrain just fine.
• When the middle 5 miles of my 7.5 mile commute was on a mud trail through a nature preserve and morning traffic was coyotes and bobcats, a mountain bike made more sense.
• When my commute was on hilly and poorly paved urban streets, a streetified mountain bike that gave me a wide range of gears, fenders and panniers was best.
Each commute demands a different bike.

I have one bike and I love it. It does everything I need. It's my Surly LHT, so touring bike for me. Used to ride a hybrid. It served is function, but the Surly is so much better.
That said, I'd commute on just about anything with two wheels that was safe... Or three if I had a recumbent trike.

it's too bad that this forum doesn't allow more than 10 poll options. i would have loved to include more options for all of you "others" out there. oh well.
anyway, my favorite commuter bike is a BD.com titanium road bike. so fast! so fun!

I voted MTB but I use my FG road bike most often when the weather is good. My Fisher Opie MTB is a urban assault bike that gets "winterized" to where I can ride across a frozen tundra on it, and my Serotta T-Max MTB is a sub-18lb firecracker that has a Columbus Max frame and just about everything else that is not VTX is carbon fiber, and I often use it when I ride with my friends who only have road bikes.

my C&V road franken-bike, single speed conversion. Simple drive train for cheap replacement, so I don't have to feel bad about the daily wear and tear. I'll commute on my new cyclecross for fun some days, but I prefer to keep that bike for my longer weekend rides.

Considering both of my bikes are hybrids, I voted hybrid.
