I worked on a golf course when I was in college when dutch elm went through. I was there in the third year of it and I think we removed something like 80 trees on a 72 hole golf course that summer. I don't think there was a single one left when it was all over.

My wife is a horticulturalist and though my ignorance about things natural borders on absolute, she's helped me identify ash trees. This morning on my ride in (which was stunning with the canopy of changing leaves at sunrise) I realized most of the trees on the first 3 miles of the trail is mostly ash. This is really serious!

Yes. And you guys are pretty much at ground zero for this. I think the beetle is spreading slower than anticipated, but it is devastating when it does spread.

They cut down a lot of Ash trees this summer, it reminded me of the loss of the Elm trees due to Dutch Elm disease in the '70s. Combine that with the drought this summer and it was pretty brown and hot.

October is also the beginning of the US Government's fiscal year. In the military, you always see improvements in October, before all the money is gone. They're repainting and putting down new carpet in most of our building. Started 1 October and is scheduled to be complete 14 November, probably when the money runs out.
