At work I've joined a new team but my office is just over a mile away from where most of the team actually sits so I need to move between buildings a lot. No problem, I'll just station my single speed at work full time and use it as my building to building commuter.

I rode it for the first time today in my work clothes (jeans, t-shirt, sneakers) and I noticed that my "undercarriage cargo" shifted around a lot. I commute to work in normal cycling bibs that keeps everything in the right place, but in jeans that's not the case.

So my question is does anyone have any tips on getting a new saddle specifically for the on-campus commuter bike that'll prevent me from having difficulty with my precious cargo? My rides are likely no more than 2-3 miles at any point so I'm not looking for distance comfort, I'm looking more for short term comfort that keeps important bits in a safe place (i.e. not between my leg and the inside of the saddle. )

Your problem isn't the saddle, it's your junk. They don't make saddles with built in jock straps, so get more supportive underwear and you should be fine. the solution can be as simple as a switch from boxers to briefs, or from briefs to better fitting briefs.

I also find that a more upright position is better when riding in jeans or the like, so that's an option since the rides are too short to worry about aerodynamics.

Why didn't this issue ever come up when we were young?

We rode all the time, and had no special saddles, shorts, underwear....

I will agree with FBinNY, though. It's not the saddle on your comfiest bike that keeps your junk in line, it's the shorts. I recently changed from briefs to boxer-briefs. Forget about the cycling aspect of it.... it was one of the best clothing decisions I've ever made.

Funny thing is, I only became aware of them from a Louis CK comedy routine.

I normally wear cotton boxers, but if I'm riding without cycling shorts I prefer lycra boxer briefs. Only problem is they ride up like crazy. I would think cotton boxer briefs would do the same. I have to pinch through my pants and try to pull the legs of the briefs down every so often while stopped at a traffic light or whatever.

I have a Nashbar FC-1 semi-cutout seat on my commuter, on sale for $20 as I write this. I'll sometimes wear bibs under my clothing, but most of the time tightey-whiteys keep me out of trouble.
