Ah man, you really gotta read some bass player jokes. There's a true depth of depravity. Before one gig my guitarist locked his keys in the car. It took 45 minutes to get the drummer out. My girlfriend too.

I haven't gotten many comments. Some are interested in how far I ride and are usually impressed (they probably have no concept of 12 miles on a bike). One lady occasionally takes a motherly role and tells me to be careful on my ride home.

I am enjoying reading these. The worst I get is the usual "did you ride today?", "how far is your commute?", and "are you going to beat the rain?".

The stupidest question I get asked way too often, "How was the weather this morning?"

They must seriously think cyclist ride in from another world.

"He's just riding to work to get his endorphin high" I had to laugh. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think my 5 mi commute is enuff to give me an endorphin high. Not that I don't enjoy the ride.

I work at a Ford dealer so I'm a bit of a curiosity in this Ŧgaz burningŧ oriented industry. It's been 4 years since I started working and bike commuting here but I still get comments and jokes almost every day.

My favorite is when one of my co worker tell everybody how soft and not dedicated I am when I take the van at -27° celcius on some winter days because I stopped commuting below -25 (since I froze my left thigh on a -30° commute last january)

Small office here so everyone knows I ride on Tues/Thurs. If I don't ride sometimes I get asked why I didn't ride. Also some people here have a genuine concern for my safety on my 31 mile round trip, 2/3 of which are on 2-lane roads with no shoulder and plenty of hills.

On the funny side, a co-worker asked, as I was heading to the washroom to change out of work clothes into my cycling lycra, "Are you going to transform?".

A majority of the of the folks at my workplace either bike commute daily, part time, or are avid riders outside of work hours. The bike culture is so ingrained here that no one ever says anything stupid/funny/or ignorant anymore. In fact, the ones that don't ride seem to mostly act apologetic about it. But no one cares, whatever works for you there's no pressure. But there is a lot of cultural encouragement just from being around so many bike commuters.

Most of the quotes here are suitably stupid/ignorant and funny, but this one probably warrants some consideration:

I had just gotten to work and was sitting outside the back door, cooling down before heading to my desk.

A new girl on another floor of our building wWas walking by and we had a fun little exchange.

New girl: "I wish I lived close enough to ride to work."
Me: "Maybe you do."
New girl: "No, how far is your ride."
Me: "I live in Garland. It's 26 miles, each way."
New girl now mouth open and bulging eyes: "Oh my. I'm not even going to tell you how close I live."

I later found out she lives about 6 miles from the office. I ride within a mile of her neighborhood.

What type of workplace is that? Any guess on the average age of your co-workers?

I make it a practice to be thirty minutes early on the days I ride. If I have a flat or a mechanical, I can rectify it and still get to work on time.
I don't ever want to give them the opportunity to say, "He's only late because he refuses to drive a car."

I get the usual surprise about riding in the rain, how far do you go...

I do not recall any ridiculous ones though. I have been at the same job for 5 of the last 7 years so everyone knows me and knows I ride in.

I have a great boss who acts like a mother/wife she is concerned for my safety and worries when she hears about a bike accident.

Not co- workers but my suburban neighbors. " You rode all the way to Boston? I said" Yes, it's and hour by car, and 15 minutes longer by bike" They just scratch their head. Then I ask them if they drove to the gym today. They always say yes.

Most funny looks and comments come from people who don't know me. I went to a special after-hours event at the LBS recently, and a couple of the Redbull girls where outside trying out bikes. They were obviously super novice. When I pulled up one girl goes "did you RIDE your bike here" I was like uhh yeah from my house just a couple miles over there. She looked floored and said "oh my GAWWSHHH I could never ride that far!!" and then I mentioned I ride 15 miles each way to work a couple times a week. She just about fell flat out on the ground.

People are shocked when they find that I ride 7 miles each way. They have no frame of reference for bicycle travel; when I say it takes about 25-30 minutes, they say "oh, is that all?".

At first my co-workers looked at me like a sort of freak, but now they accept me. In fact, when a new one asked "Did you really ride all the way from there?" (11 km) another replied proudly "He does it every day!"
Different appreciation of weather too. On a very hot day, a woman said she was so tired and uncomfortable, her car's AC broke and she had to drive to work (1/2 hr) without it.
