This morning's ride to work was a reminder that winter in Wisconsin can throw you a surprise or two. Temps were around the freezing mark (32F) but somebody didn't tell me that the ice/fog/snow mix was in the forecast as well. It was a little slower and the MUP was a little slick for the 4 miles I was on it. I still love the fact that I can commute in January! Looking forward to February and the rest of the year too!

My office was closed yesterday, so no commuting. Though the spring-like 60F would have been nice. I guess I'll just look forward to today's forecast high of 64 instead. It was about 40F this morning, but that's easy compared to the sub-freezing we had recently and most have across the country.

Last week I noticed my rear tire showing some wear. I put new front and rear tires on last April. I went with Bontrager AW/2 700x25's that my local shop carried. They now have close to 4,000 miles on them. No flats. The rear has some wear but the front still looks pretty good. I stopped by the shop yesterday and picked up one new one to replace the rear tire. I'll wait a bit longer for the front.

Broke my acetabulum (hip socket) 2 years ago & got a titanium band in to fix it.
Apparently not that uncommon a cycling accident, which was news to me !
BAD sciatica now probably due to a slipped disc that wasn't noticed at the time.....getting an MRI scan Thursday. Oh to cycle free of sciatica !!!

This morning's commute was dry & cold.......but a thin merino wool base layer + wind-breaker jacket + cycling balaclava = perfect for temps down to -6C or -7C.

I use this time of year to wash summer bikes, it helps me not feel so bad about the mess I'm riding. In the winter, I typically only lube the chain and clean the brake rotors (the frame just doesn't last a ride).

With that said, this morning was a great day to add more grime to my frame - 30F. Felt GREAT! So much warmer than the start of the month.

Tough commute this morning despite unseasonably mild weather. First, my legs were tired from lots of riding over the long weekend. Then, I dressed on the lighter side because the temperatures are supposed to reach the mid-60s here this afternoon. So, I had to pedal harder to keep warm on my morning commute, but I suffered because my legs were so tired.

We had incredible weather here over the weekend, and I rode 180+ miles between Friday and Monday. My birthday was yesterday (61), and I got my birthday ride on Saturday -- riding 67 miles over a very hilly route. Usually the weather makes it difficult to complete my birthday ride, and this was the nicest weather I can remember for my birthday.

My wife's birthday was Saturday; she felt the same way, best birthday weather she can remember. We took the Pugsleys out and found some new trails to explore. Birthday + Bikes = Awesome

34F this morning, I was going to ride my road bike (that's clean and shiny) but forecast was for rain and snow. Of course it's sunny and beautiful outside and rain and snow are tomorrow, oh well. Good news is my alternate route trail seems to finally be clear of snow so looking forward to riding it for the first time in over a month for the ride home

Awesome ride home yesterday, upper 50's, wearing just bike shorts and short-sleeve jersey with arm warmers, and my half-finger gloves (SO much easier to deal with!). Had a nice tail wind. Made it home well before 6 PM which has been rare these days.

I wanted to ride again today, but have to take my son to the dentist this afternoon which necessitated taking the car. They would frown upon me using the company vehicle for that.

Temps will be a little cooler tomorrow and Thursday but I hope to ride both those days anyway.

Not super cold this morning. Commuted in with my girlfriend. Some light wind, and it was clear.

After fighting illnesses with the family I got back on the bike.

My breathing is still affected by the cold remnants but my legs felt good. I caught some lights and my moving average speed was maybe the highest ever at 26.7 km/h.

There were a lot of people out enjoying the gorgeous weather we are having which was nice to see. It is amazing that I can cycle the same routes almost every day and I still see people whom I don't recognize. It makes me glad to know so many cyclists are giving it a try.

I had shifty winds today. It felt like a headwind occasionally but only for very brief periods. I suspect it was mostly a crosswind and often a tailwind. My speedometer said 14 mph for much of the time, and that made me feel strong. Now that I'm settling into this commute, it's feeling like less of a chore.

I figured out how to secure one ear of my headphones on me and let the other ear hang off. This is legal in New York State, and it's a pretty decent compromise. I listened to Freakonomics podcasts the whole way. Maybe that's why it was less of a chore. It's good stuff.

It was good to be back on the bike. Sunday we had major ice storms in the area. I drove my car, and that was pretty scary. I would have been terrified to be on a bike.

First ride to my new office today. Went from 6.8 miles each way to about 3.1 miles. I'm going to try to get in more miles on the weekend.

You could go home for lunch with that distance. Double commute each day would make for almost the same mileage you used to get.

I just remembered that a kid waiting for the school bus this morning yelled, "B!tch," at me as I rode by. It will probably scar me for the rest of my life, if I remember that it happened.

I was at said game

Rode Monday, but while I don't remember injuring myself, I instantly felt pain in my left achilles with every rotation of the cranks. Took the Skytrain partway to and from work, but drove today and got an appointment with my chiropractor. Told him about the achilles thing and I could have sworn he let a bit of his evil laugh slip out. Pulls out this set of Graston Technique instruments and went to work:



It was PAINFUL. But man did it feel better afterwards.

A bit inflamed and tender tonight; think I'm stuck driving again tomorrow. Here's to riding again just in time for the rain to start on Thursday!

Just at freezing. Dry now but some light snow expected...and salt, salt, salt everywhere.

Nice commute this morning after suffering yesterday. My legs felt much better as I'm recovering from long weekend rides. I also was able to dress warmer because it's not supposed to warm up nearly as much this afternoon as it did yesterday. The high reached 67 F yesterday afternoon, which made it hard to pick the right clothes for both commutes, so I under-dressed in the morning.

Encountered several overly polite drivers who reached 4-way stops well before me and then refused to budge until I went. I guess they are waving me and thinking they're being nice, but I can't see through their windows in the dark/dusk. I wish drivers would just treat cyclists like other cars. I would rather they be predictable than "nice."

We're continuing with our warmer days. It was about 60F for my ride home yesterday. Very nice.
About 40F for this morning. Not bad at all.

Nobody yelled at me this morning. I did make a pit stop in some trees. I really had to go and am not sure why I didn't have the urge before leaving home.

Only my third commute of the year, the weather is not on my side so far, too much snow mainly. When there's too much snow it makes my commute too long to be realistic. this morning I needed 1h27 min. with almost clear roads.

It's a cold morning, -20°c, but very sunny and no Wind.

Last year I managed 5 commute in january, I'm at 3 so far so I may be able to match last year total until the end of the month.

Also, riding home last night, I took a 'shortcut' across a frozen lake, 'cause Pugsley does that kinda stuff. I did go out of my way to get to this 'shortcut'.

Planned to ride this morning, didn't happen. I got after replacing all the cables on my Felt road bike commuter last night (first time replacing cables and housing on a road bike), after washing the bike, and that all took over 3 hours such that it was after midnight when I went to bed. No way was I getting up at 5 AM.

So I drove the car with the bike and plan to split my commute between today and tomorrow, and might also ride tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning.
