24v LiFEpo4 battery pack- a bit confused on what to get.
Background info- My commute is ~20 miles with some good hills along the way. I charge my bike at work. My ebike is a DIY 24v 380w motor cyclone mid drive kit.
My 20Ah deep cycle SLA batteries finally kicked the bucket and I have some money for a much nicer battery. They did the job but just barely, with the system totally dead just before the end of the return trip(one extra, long steep hill finishes it off). The speed would noticably drop half way as well. I would like to have a lot more range.
I am looking into LiFep04 batteries- but im having trouble figuring out what I need and where to buy from. $600 is about the maximum I wish to spend, but I could go a little higher if it gets me a lot more power. Ping batteries has a 30Ah battery in my price range, but If I could get a 40Ah battery and assemble it myself I would prefer that. What would I need to build the Battery? I know I would need 8 40Ah cells and a charger. Do I need some sort of circuit to monitor the batteries? I am also having trouble finding a source that cells the Batteries, charger and circut all in one place.

Most people would say to stay away from "duct tape" batteries off of eBay..
I have received 3 batteries from YXM/DAOJI off of eBay...
They took about a week to get to me and worked as (and better then) advertised..
Ask then how much for a 30ah or 40ah... Or better yet.. For $389 shipped they have a 36v 20Ah battery... (if your kit will handle 36v)... I was consistently getting 40 miles on a charge..
That's way under your budget...
(Any of their other batts are not as inexpensive as that one, $/WH, and include a charger and BMS.)

My son uses a Ping 30 amp battery with the Cyclone 500 watt. Works great and something I would recommend. Just curious. How fast are you going topped out with your cyclone 360? I ask because I am soon to build a cyclone powered recumbent. My sons bike will run around 22 mph. That is with me 210 lbs on a recumbent and not peddling. I am not sure if I want to use the 360 or 500.
Thanks

A few years back I used to run a 360w Cyclone and like you started out with twin 18ah lead packs. I actually still have those pack and actually use them now nad then. But about 2 1/2 years ago I started using Thunder Sky brand lifepo4 cells. They now cost $124 per 12v pack (20ah). So you could buy a 24v 40ah 2C pack for $496 and about $24 shipping. But this does not include a BMS or any type of LVC or HLV. Nor does it include a charger. So this would be a good potion for you if you were a hands on type of person. What I liked about this type of cells is they are sold here in the USA. They also have bolt on type of connections as apposed to soder connections. The individual cells are also built into a hard case plastic shell as apposed to the normal alm foil most use.
As for Ping packs....they did start out on EBay but they are far from an "EBay Seller". They are well known now and have an extreamly good rep of high personal service. If I were looking for a premade complete pack (cells, BMS and charger) I would give Ping a very good long hard look. I don't think anyone that knows lifepo4 packs would tell you anything different. As I said, the only thing I don't like is they ship from China so service is also from China. And if you ever (and you will eventually) have to repair or replace a cell they need to be re-sodered in. Headway is also a great option. About the same price as Ping but they have (if you buy the right cells) have bolt on connections. But they are normally sold as cells only unless you buy them from a Pack builder.

ha! this is a great topic
I was also looking into the same sort of information on help me in my new purchase
my old system is a BionX PL 350, which gets pretty much the same distance and speed mentioned here in this topic on a single charge
i want something faster which only a 500w motor can deliver, but they usually eat up more juice thus reducing the distance you can go, so i was also trying to spec out a good combo of 500w + X amount of battery to give me a nice long trip hopefully something further than 40 miles (64 Km) at 31 Mph (50 Km/h)
Trying to find a good balance for a system that can take me on 100 Km (62 mile) round trip ride on a single charge (that's my average commute)
I know for a fact that i'll probably end up with 2 batteries instead of a single big gigantic and heavy one
That's why this time around i'm not even going to bother getting the BionX as they are hard to upgrade / expand without using their own certified parts.
Thank you all so far with the information already provided in just these few posts, which is exactly the names i needed to know to research further into making my own Kit

found some handy info for math calculation https://www.ebikes.ca/batteries.shtml
they even got a nice calculator to get an idea how the different items combined will sort of perform https://www.ebikes.ca/simulator/

It seems you like DIY very much,I know one guy's factory can do customized batteries.
Last time he said the max capacity of his single cells is 12.5AH,is it enough?
you may design a new battery and ask the factory to make it .

I'm New Zealand i buy from https://www.bmsbattery.com/ mind you I;m about to track the charger they hav suposed to have sent, Check out price
the charger arrived i still recommend these people especialy for the price --their first on web battery is for low wattage motors & if you have say 500w or more you must increase Amps on battery BMS to meet the extra curent. I buy cells & make pack to suit front of bikes.-Am Always though looking for better deals.

hmmmm, you got a lot here..1st which do you prefer all ready plug and go or assemble your own battery.
plug and go.. Ping is best choice... If you want to assemble one, consider Hobby King, order from USA warehouse.
https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8582
they usually have best price. You can get balance chargers there too. For a charger this is one a lot of people raved about;
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HYPERION-EOS...30314310446183
you'll need a power supply....meanwell is a good one, check out EP buddy, they have chargers, batteries, connectors etc
https://epbuddy.com/index.php?main_pa...roducts_id=169
excellant fast sevice, located in Ohio
look things over, yell, when you need more
I know you want to assemble battery yourself, are you comfortable doing that?
15rms;
want to go fast, get the 900watt cyclone
here is link to Wisil hpv, very info

Surfed those site wishthey'd say the volts but presumably 8s means 8cells at 3.3v stay with the china one I think also the current for BMS ? i found always have BMS current higher than max of motor.IE 500-700w = with 24v min 30 Amp for the BMS, Stuffed a few to find out.
