Edge 810/510 Firmware update tip
I recently bought a Garmin Edge 810 with the US maps, HRM, and cadence. It came out of the box with firmware 2.2 version. I updated to 2.6, and then I started to have the HRM connection drop out, elevation was all over the place, and it froze on my second ride about 10 minutes into it. I found that others were having this problem as well, so I did a reset and reinstalled the 2.6 firmware using the webinstaller. This seemed to do the trick as I have not had any issues for about 8 rides.
I followed the Garmin procedure for updating and found that resetting solves a lot of issues. Might have to do with some corrupt files lingering from the update.
Here is the procedure from their website:
How do I master reset my Edge 810 or 510?
01/24/2013
There are a few instances in which it may be necessary to perform a master reset on the Edge 810 or 510. A master reset should be performed if the Edge is:
◦Not functioning properly
◦Needing to be restored to factory default settings*
◦Not receiving a satellite signal
◦To bring up language selection prompt if incorrect language text is showing
◦Unable to pair up accessories, such as the heart rate monitor or speed/cadence sensor
All settings, workouts and satellite data may be erased when resetting the GPS. Workouts can be backed up in Garmin Connect. Refer to the FAQ article "How can I backup my personal settings and profiles on my Edge 810 or 510?" to back up personalized settings.
To perform the master reset:
1.Power device off
2.Press and hold Lap and Start/Stop
3.Power device on while still holding both buttons
4.Continue holding buttons when the Garmin "splash" screen appears
5.Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears
The Edge is now reset if the device finishes powering up and goes to the setup wizard. Try the steps again if the setup wizard does not appear.
Leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.
*A User Data Clear can be performed in order to remove personal settings without removing history.
To perform the User Data Clear:
1.Power device off
2.Touch and hold finger in top-left corner of display
3.Power device on while still maintaining pressure on display
4.Release display when the Reset all user settings? message appears
5.Touch Yes (check mark)
This will erase personal settings, such as the user profile. However, saved activities will not be removed.
******You may also have to re-install the firmware update. I used the webinstaller*******************
Hope this helps for someone. I was pretty frustrated when my 810 was all wacked out!!!

Awesome! Thanks for posting this. I had an issue with an older Garmin where someone posted a tip like this and it certainly helped. My 510 is currently being shipped and so I'll have to do the upgrade.

I've used the Webupdater with my 510, too, and it has performed flawlessly. No issues with updating the firmware.
