38 miles, 2500' of climbing with a few friends. Some low fog at the start, sunny and 60s at the end. An absolutely amazing day to be on the bike.

I have a conflict in rules today. Sunday is the one day of the week that I don't exercise, but "Winter Riding Rules" say that if the weather is good, one must ride. I'm not sure which will win out.

We had a nice break in the rains today, so I went out south and west of Eugene for 44 miles. The roads were a bit wet, but it is warm (50's) and not raining, so good as it gets for a while. Nice to be out.

My son and I did a quick 24 mile ride along the American river. Breakfast in Old Sac and a quick stop for a photo op.

18 bike trail miles last night on the singlespeed. One advantage of riding in the winter: it was deserted. Saw 3-4 cyclists, one walker, a few deer, and a rabbit.

Getting over a bad cold, but did about 3 hours today - temp 50F - partly sunny, little wind - perfect riding conditions. I found out that one does not have much energy while still recovering from a cold!!

No new snow and less wind today, so after 3 miles on the dreadmill, 6 miles on the mtn bike felt great even at 21º

Metric century. To the beach and back (Sunday) Gorgeous weather we have here in the wintertime. 70s and sunny, and always breezy.

Rode 2 miles on Sunday before it started raining hard; since then, it has turned into Winter around here. Last 2 "rides" have been on the trainer. 0 miles at 0 mph for a 0 mph average. (30 minutes each "ride") Is it almost Spring, yet?

Rode the MTB 8 miles out to the Bear Creek Regional Park, "Singletrack" area, put 1 hr. on the trails, then rode 8 miles home, for a total of 22.48 miles! I'm still having trouble getting to the top when the trail goes into a sharp upwards corner, I'll get it one day! Suppose to SNOW tonight/tommorow and maybe off and on till Friday morning, BUMMER!

After several rainy days today sported sun, cumulus clouds and mild (55*F) temps. I spent 2:20 on the Diva to accumulate 38 miles. Enjoyed it very much.

37 miles this morning with the Thursday group. we cut it a bit short as rain was moving in. One of the riders is organizing a 300k for Dec 28. I think I might join it!

Last good day before the rains - 24 miles on the tandem with a bit of climbing and a short stop for coffee. The next 9-10 days look really dreadful.

Twelve degrees this afternoon with a riding surface of snow covered loose gravel and frozen gravel. I rode for an hour and fifteen minutes and then called it quits because I was starting to get chilled and the temperature was starting to drop. There wasn't much of a wind -- all in all, a nice ride actually.

Everything covered with a glaze of ice. Temps in low 20's F. Did about 18 miles around town and on gravel. the gravel was dicey. Still, it was a great day to be out. Saw 3 swans fly overhead.

Rode tonight with 5 others for around 1 hour. It was clear and calm, but it was 14 degrees so it wasn't the most of pleasant rides. We cut the ride short because a couple of the riders got cold finger or toes. The beer and dinner at the tavern was very good.

Got in a 24 mile ride Friday am during a dry-road break in the rain, but the wind was really up. A 14 mile stretch with some climbing I've done in 50 minutes took me 69. The valleys around here act as wind tunnels, but the ride back home was fun. Raining pretty hard now; looks like it's going to be a soggy Christmas week.

Beautiful day to get pics of Lake Erie in transition. A-jet, I think you'll be ice fishin on the West Basin in about two weeks. 19º today but it felt more like 29º. Must be the sunshine.

Bike marks the spot where I went down. Ouch, helmetless head meets solid ice.

One of their last meals on an open Lake Erie.

Ice sculpture via northerly winds.

One last run.

The winter cycling season has begun! Yesterday's trip to work was four miles of unplowed, creamy soft powder, and six miles of mostly plowed roads. It was a good reintroduction to winter cycling, as I had powder, hardpack, loose ice, and solid ice. The real payoff, though, was the trip home -- perfectly clear, black sky, incredibly bright moonlight reflecting off seemingly endless snowfields along the black flow of Four Mile Run, and Christmas lights everywhere. It was like being in a Currier and Ives print. After I got home, we went out to dinner and then settled down by the fire for our family tradition of reading A Christmas Carol aloud every night. I relaxed with my Laphroaig and reflected that this is how the Christmas season should be, and that the evening's commute was the essance of cycling.

After a week in California (without a bike, unfortunately, though I did in some good runs including some of the hills of San Francisco), I returned back to American Siberia. It was a comparatively mild day, with temperatures in the mid-teens and I did 14 winterbike miles on packed snow trails. I'm still getting the hang of winter riding (and riding a MTB, which is also new to me). Mostly I like it, though it's not the same as summer roadbiking. I just gazed jealously at Big John's post higher in the thread from about a week ago....
