The average temperatures for January 29 in this area are 30F to 45F. Yesterday, 01/29/11, it was 73 and sunny here, so we got out and rode the mountain. 67 miles and a tail wind coming home. Make hay while the sun shines!

Today was a different story. Overcast and the thermometer strained but just could not reach 43. 21 miles and a north wind

We will pay dearly for the great Saturday we had. Weather Service already has a Winter Storm Warning for us on Tuesday. All types of frozen chaos is forecast

The good news is that I've had my best January ever.

The wife and I got in 20 miles of "chilly to COLD" riding today. We are trying to get her, "Bent Body", LOL, as it was described to me, the shop recommended 3 rides of min. of 20 miles 3 to 4 times a week for a MONTH. That's for I guess, the MIN. Bent Body, getting use to the different set's of muscles than we were using on the DF bikes. That's EASY for me to get but with Jo's work schedule and the "weird" weather, it's bein a PIA for her to get up to snuff!

We both are slower riding the bents but we have a lot less "body pains", I'll take less speed and less pain as a good thing! LOL, I don't think I've ever been "smiled" at by the general public as much on any of my DF machines as we do on these Recumbents!

Oh yeah, I did ride today - a little more than 20 miles on the snow bike with the normal small-group that goes out on the slow Sunday club ride. It was relatively warm (about 18 °F, I think) and I was quite warm. Didn't need my goggles. But again, some of the trails are in poor shape.

It was certainly a great weekend and quite a Spring tease. We do have some of the best road riding anywhere, even in the winter, when the weather obliges. In another 4-6 weeks, today's weather should be about the norm. I'm hoping anyway.

I pedaled fifteen miles on Sunday afternoon, on my fixed gear bike, around a couple of historic neighborhoods in Los Angeles.

In the morning, golden sunlight had streamed into the house, and I dressed for a planned ride an hour away. When I went outside for the newspaper, I could see bilious, black clouds, piling up to the west and north. Instead of riding, I read the paper and drank a couple of cups of coffee, as raindrops began to pelt the city. Over the next few hours, rain occasionally fell hard.

Hours later, sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, and a blustery wind chased away the clouds. By 4 p.m., the streets were mostly dry, and soon after I was on the road.

With the warm light of late afternoon in winter, the day had taken on a dream-like quality. Mist streamed over the top of the mountain above the Hollywood Sign. I headed east, to the Victoria Park neighborhood. The only way into the neighborhood, which is semi-gated, is off of Pico Blvd. I did laps around the signature oval street (reportedly one of only two in the city) that's .33 miles around. The street is lined with palms and some of the city's finest two-story, Craftsman-style homes, built early in the 20th Century.

From Victoria Park, I headed south, along wide Crenshaw Blvd., to Lafayette Square, another semi-gated community, founded in 1913 (a few years after Victoria Park). The 236 large homes, spread over eight blocks, are a spectacular mix of significant architectural styles: Italianate, Neo-Federalist, Spanish Revival, etc. Among other luminaries, Joe Louis and W.C. Fields reputedly had homes in the neighborhood.

I rode a few laps around the planted divider along St. Charles Place, which is the street at the center of the neighborhood, before heading south again, to prosaic Adams Blvd., and then west into Culver City, before returning to my mid-city home, in the historic South Carthay neighborhood.

I decided to try the more direct route to work using the Four Mile Run trail. Wham. wham, wham. I went for three miles, getting lots of air. About half of the trailiwas rough ice, cratered like the moon due to a chronic jogger/dog walker infestation. The remaining seven miles was on porefectly clear roads. Nice challenge, really, although the longer route on Columbia Pike might well have been faster. I'll do it again on the trip home because it was a good adventure.

I did a 90 mile training ride yesterday. I foolishly put my faith in the weather forecaster's prediction and did not wear knee warmers. 40 miles from home the clouds came in and it got cold. 10 miles from home it started to rain. My knees were freezing by the time I got home.

I hate riding in soggy bike shorts and getting road slime sprayed all over my back.

Great training ride, especially in those conditions!

Got in a moderate paced 62 on Saturday on a club ride, then 37 @ 17.5 yesterday. Was lucky on yesterday's ride. started at 10 am, didnt wear knee warmers but did wear arm warmers. The first 18 miles were mostly a moderate climb (steeper for the last 5 miles), and I took off the arm warmers after 8 miles. Didnt need them the rest of the ride. I guess it was about 56 when I left, and 62 when I got home.

My riding and reporting have been intermittent; weather is a big factor and I don't post any trainer or gym time.

Today was the most brilliant, cloud-free day we've had in weeks. So I left shortly after 9, when the temps were still in the low 40s. Got in some intervals, a 5-mi. TT effort, then bonked. The last 1/3rd of my 46.7 miles was painful and pitiful. But as the weather was absolutely gorgeous I enjoyed that I was outside and moving.

Note to self: Next time, take food. Doh!

I teach a spin class on Tuesday mornings. Today we did power interval ladders. I know it's a good class when the mirrors on the wall get all fogged up.

We have a coalition meeting tonight at 7:30pm. The ice storm just passed through here, and the roads are ice-covered. I'm not sure if I'll ride. It's about four miles, round trip. It would be stupid to ride, but I like it when I succeed at something stupid.

Easy 14 mile ride (gym work this am), but our first ride with our daVinci converted to 10 speed using a Jtek Shiftmate (Campy Chorus shifters, Shimano RD). The setup worked flawlessly. Oh, and it was cold, might have been 50F.
