No ride yesterday. Got a late, mid-morning start for today's 35 mile ride so the temperature was already close to 90*. It didn't help that the rangers were doing a controlled burn of about one mile of woods along the south loop of the park. Smokey and a little hotter along the burn area.

Fifteen miles around town today, 40 mi yesterday. Haven't been riding much for about a week because I've developed a swelling which may be caused by riding. At least I hope it is, otherwise it might be a lot more serious.

Since the Raleigh's still laid up, I wound up taking the Kona out for my 'Le Tour de Bullhead'. Felt like I was riding in quicksand compared to the Raleigh. Also took the Trek for a test run since replacing the chain. I think I'm going to like the bullhorns I put on it (maybe the Raleigh as well).

PR for an after work ride. 80.3 miles 18.9 mph ave. Don't think I'll do that again any time soon.

Took a route that did not have many climbs at all because of the heat...

Two rides this morning. First ride was an 18 mile group ride with my LBS. Second was a 26 mile ride to make up the difference for our normal, 44 mile Saturday rides. Two very good rides.

21 miles with my wife today. We came upon this road that she said, "you need your exercise, ride up that hill". So I did. A nice 16% grade, thankfully not too long. Here's views looking up and down. Looking up doesn't give the same perspective. In the looking down photo, my wife is the white spec waiting for me at the bottom of the hill.

47 miles on the Screamer this morning on a club ride with My Favorite Stoker. Actually, it was a fundraiser for the B&O Trail, a rails-to-trails that is still, after many years, more Planned Trail than Actual Trail. Moving forward, though.

27 miles with two friends this morning. No wind basically, but it didn't take long to show signs of warming up. Glad we were getting done by then. Summer is coming fast.

Did another recon ride in the area where I'm buying a vacation/retirement home in a few weeks. What a wonderful ride. I went hours at a time without seeing a car (OK a slight exaggeration, but not by much.)

109 miles, only a couple of climbs, about 6500K of elevation gain.

So... when is my retirement date again??

Wow, I feel pathetic. So far only pedaled to the coffee shop for a take out and donuts. A WHOLE MILE..!!!! Fun though. I got to sit on a bench under the trees, feel the breeze. I think I'll pedal over to the Subway for lunch in awhile, too. Better than TV.

I rode 29 miles today as a deferred recovery ride from last Sunday's very tough organized ride. 6 days without riding and I'm not sure I feel guilty. What gives?

Another 44 mile ride with my cycling buddies. Hot, but a nice breeze made it bearable.

My sweetie and I did 62.7 on the tandem yesterday.



I followed that with a "recovery" ride today, a.k.a. feel-your-pain-again. Only about 35 miles. Don't know exactly. These high-end vintage bikes just don't work right when you put a "computer" on them.

I rode my old (but upgraded) Schwinn Alum Comp MTB on the road. It wasn't the best choice, but at least I got a good workout! I seriously need to get a real true road bike, and keep the Schwinn for its intended purpose of riding gravel trails, double track, single track, etc... and when wanting to ride on the roads, buy a true road bike.

Looks like a great road to ride! But how do you ride back? The paved shoulder on the other side of the road appears to be very narrow.

8 easy miles this evening. Had to go check out progress on major renovation of an intersection of two secondary roads. They are adding a stoplight and turning lanes plus.........they have decreased the slope of what was previously a respectably steep but short hill. Won't be able to check that out for several weeks, I would guess.

Did the French Creek Iron Tour in PA today. I chose the 75-mi option. It was moderately hilly (4161' gain) and very scenic, as promised. Lots of farmland and parks and lots of rest stops. I did the ride in 7:35 hrs, inc breaks, not fast but steady. After the tour, I rode around on the grass fields for 1/2 hr, then rode around my town for an hour when I got home. I love warm days.

I went on my standard ride to and through Prairie Creek Redwoods. It had three interesting new features:

First, as I was riding off the freeway onto the road for the park, I noticed some cars stopped on the left side of the exit ramp. I kept going and almost ran into a huge male elk with velvety antlers on the right. I stopped in time, and he looked up, stopped chewing with grass hanging out of his mouth, and he didn't like what he saw. I got off the bike, and he liked that even less. I essentially said, "Excuse me, Mr. Elk, I'll just walk over behind these cars." He let me go. From now on, I'll always take the camera.

Second, it was the warmest I've ever felt in the forest, and there was a nice, sweet forest smell that I've only noticed in warmer climates.

Third, I started talking with a fellow rider who was riding from Seattle to Palo Alto. He didn't have any packs, his girlfriend was driving along with him. He had been doing 100 miles per day, averaging 20 MPH. I rode with him back to Kane Road, and had to work VERY hard to keep up (he dropped me on the hills). The guy was from Chili, but had just finished a masters at Stanford.
