OK, did 12 miles at about 16 mph (9:15 - 11:00 minus 1 hour in the LBS = 45 mins cycling). Not too bad I guess. I didn't buy a new bike just a new helmet, gloves, and some oil. Also got them to check the fit twixt me and my bike -- turns out the saddle was too far back. Er, I am less than 200 lbs but I've turned Homer Simpson-shaped (zero ciggies means > snacks. What, I'm not allowed to snack?).

Well, the way you described yourself, I thought you were at least 800 lbs.

Sounds like you don't have too far to go. Great to get your bike fitted more correctly. That can be an evolving process, especiallyas your body might change shape or as you get a bit older and not so wet behind the ears

Fruit is a great snack.

Sloth, you're doing good and well do and feel a lot better now that you have a better attitude.

Try to get some gym time if you can work it in three days a week.

At your young age I guess you are still working but stay active.

If you don't stay very active you will pay for it later. Great that you stopped smoking, that will be one of the best things you have done. I stopped 20 years ago. (two packs a day)

Have a happy

Well that's a tad rude (should I call you Bore?). ... rest deleted in deference to decent folks like DnvrFox who are just trying to help riders out.

Slocoach: self-effacing by nature. So tell me everyone: do I need to do three days of gym time a week as well as the riding? I was pretty much hoping the riding would be enough (how much is "enough" for a reasonably fit -- if slightly overweight -- 50yo male?). Isn't there any space for mediocrity here? We're not all ex-marines you know (or maybe I am, who knows?). Now if it would just stop raining I could get out and ride -- or perhaps I should "HTFU" and ignore the thunder and lightning?

Only you can determine if you're happy with your level of fitness.

Edit: I long ago learned that I could spend 24/7 in the gym and it would never be "enough"... whatever enough means. Take it step by step. You won't likely figure out what works for you on day 1... and you'll likely find that your fitness routine will change and evolve depending on many factors. If you don't enjoy it, you probably won't stick with it. So have fun in the process.

Thanks speedlever. I agree that motivation (having fun!) is a major factor (that's why I've been wondering whether I should splash out on a new Trek 1.x or similar, or just stick with my Schwinn Passage. If I can get up to 20 mph reliably on the flats I think I will feel so much better about myself. Perhaps I should see what the motor can do on the Passage if I train it up a bit over a few months, then decide. On the related issues of fitness, working out, TV, and snacking I just saw this in the New York Times:

https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/0...re-at-screens/ (Phys Ed: The Men Who Stare at Screens -- By GRETCHEN REYNOLDS). Quote:

"What was unexpected was that many of the men who sat long hours and developed heart problems also exercised. Quite a few of them said they did so regularly and led active lifestyles. The men worked out, then sat in cars and in front of televisions for hours, and their risk of heart disease soared, despite the exercise. Their workouts did not counteract the ill effects of sitting."

Unfortunately my job requires that I spend many hours sitting in front of a computer. Maybe I can try to break it up with short intense rides.

I think one's fitness level is a very personal thing.

I don't do centuries, or 70 mile rides. I don't enjoy them. I don't need to prove anything to anyone, including myself. Instead, I greatly enjoy 20-40 mile rides, especially followed by lap swimming. I enjoy working out - resistance exercises, and my back's spondolythesis requires me to do those, especially core strengthening, along with some specific stretches.

The evidence I read - notwithstanding the article quoted - is that we lose about 1% of our strength per year, starting about 40 or so, and that is pretty much avoidable with resistance training. Also, intensive bicycling is conducive to osteoporosis, while resistance exercises can almost totally stop this decline in strength and help the osteo.

Bicycling does little for your upper body, nor, surprisingly, for your core. It creates big quads and small ham strings and marked imbalances of these muscles in some folks.

So, I choose a daily activity level combining bicycling, some walking, resistance exercises, swimming and stretching.

It works for me.

YMMV

Have a great day.

Thanks DF, Motivation is real important to me. I persuaded a neighbor to come riding with me twice a week (he is slower but OK) -- that will help us both stick to a minimal (very minimal!) regime. Not everyone is in this to build a super-body. I have had ankolysing spondylitis for years but it is mild and I can keep it in check with just moderate exercise. I hadn't heard about cycling being conducive to osteoporosis and I'm not going to let that worry me.

Hi all
Just joined today.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I have a 2007 Lemond Alp d'Huez as my daily rider.
A 1983 Bianchi that is in original condition
'76 Nishiki converted to fixie
A Columbia Twosome I picked up at a yard sale for casual rides with my wife.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Turmeric/Curcumin It's has anti-angiogenesis properties. It probably isn't doing anything but it makes me feel better that I'm doing something to prevent my cancer from recurring.
Vitamin D - my levels are low depite the amount of time I spend outside
Starting on CoQ10 to alleviate mild muscle pain from Crestor

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
A bit, I ride mostly with one guy that is 20 years my junior and it sucks that he can take long breaks from riding and get back in shape so quick. Plus we have started riding with someone almost 10 years his junior who can go out drinking the night before and still bury us.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Biked a lot in HS, college and after. Been back on the bike for ~10 years since my son got interested in biking.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Would like to do more longer rides but mostly rec rides a lot of it solo.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
I try to get out 2-4 times a week for 10-40 mile rides and a few centuries each season

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things
I'm 53 and live in Olney MD. Currently booked to do the Civil War Century in MD/PA, the Seagull century (and maybe try to do the metric the same day) on the Eastern shore of MD, and the Death Valley double

Looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Hi everyone. I just joined a few weeks ago when I began shopping for a bike. I hadn't ridden much besides some mountain biking for 30 years and wanted to go somewhere. Got the new bike last week and am having a ball. Rode it 120 miles in the first 5 days (then it rained). My answers are below, but first a question:

The Savannah Century is in about 3 weeks and I would love to ride in it. However, I have no clue how long it takes to train for a Century. If I am an active 51 yo, just got my bike, and am riding about 20-25 miles/day now with no problems, should I give this a whirl or wait until next year?

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Specialized Roubaix Expert
2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Naw, doctors I've talked to say they are mostly a waiste of money.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
N/A. Haven't ridden in a long time.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Biked in HS, but in the last 12 months started riding my mtn bike most days.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Ride solo 20-25 miles per day most days. Looking forward to riding with groups, but the group times interfere with my tee times

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
5-6 days per week. N/A on annual mileage.

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things
Just turned 51.

You going to spend 6 to 9 hours in the saddle to complete it.

There is a big, big jump between 25 miles and 100 miles. Yes, you likely will complete it - unless there are a lot of hills, temp is 105, etc. The question is, will you enjoy it? Your butt may be a bit raw.

Many centuries have 60 mile options, 45 mile options, etc. You might want to consider those.

Not a lot of folks read this thread. Why don't you pose it in the 50+ forum as a new thread?

Generally folks take several months in preparation for their first century.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I have a Raleigh One Way (fixed gear), a Specialized Hard Rock MTB and right now I'm restoring a Schwinn Continental 10 speed.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Beer.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Hah! Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I was a demon in HS. Started up again in my 30s, on and off since.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Triathlon, duathlon for a while there. Now commuting and 20 - 40 mile rides. Gotta do a century one of these days.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Hmmm, it varies - currently 4 to 6 days a week, no idea about annual mileage, I'm coming out of a running-intensive marathon crazed phase.

I turned 50 in April. Still having fun.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides. Longer rides, short rec. rides, commuting

No Zebra Stripes?

I live in Texas with a biker bar on every corner instead of a church. It's tough enough wearing spandex here let alone trying to make a fashon statement. in Texas but not in Boulder Co

Now if they made a reflective Zebra pattern with safety green and reflective white i would go for it

I am a lifelong runner who has gradually gotten more into cycling. I can't run those fast times anymore, but I feel fast on my bike. This summer, I've ridden more and more to get ready for last weekend's Pelotonia cancer fundraiser in Columbus. I'm riding a 1988 Trek 660 that I bought from a friend two years ago for $300. With all Ultegra components, it was a good bike in its day and still gets me up the hills faster than a lot of riders half my age. I'm having a blast, and may never go back to running full time.
