when I built my motta it was with a 52/42 and a 6 speed rear, I changed to a 10 speed12/27 casette and the 52 42 was not to good , I changed the 52 to a 48, and a while later the 48 to a 39,close to the modernstuff, but works well for my riding,,,,

I do have an interesting story about gearing, climbing and being careful what you show up with. A couple of years ago, I was using two coaches from Belarus who coached the National Team for years before coming to the US. We were going to do some hill repeats up a 3.2 mile 7.2% average grade with a lot of switchbacks at 15 to 20%. We meet at the bottom and the coaches gave us our workout for the morning. The P/1/2s were doing 3 climbs and the rest of us were doing 2 climbs. They wanted the first climb in the second easiest gear, the second climb in the big ring and the 3rd anyway you could get up the hill. So the P/1/2 guys start bicthing that they have 53/39 11/23 gearing and the coaches said tough up you go. They also wanted us at 75 to 80 rpm and P/1/2 guys faster on the first climb. I had a 50/34 11/26 combination that day and did my first climb in 34/23 at 75 rpm and my second in 50/26/23 with a lot of standing but I made it. Age is overrated.
I also have an 11/25 and 12/27 that I can change out to if I'm doing a ride where more gear is needed. But for 80% of my hill riding around here the 11/23 works great. Your right. Us older guys can still rock a bike.

If you have experience making this setup work I'll take your word for it and commend your resourcefulness. What rear derailleur are you using, and is there any non-standard cable routing involved?

I have a Roubaix with a Ultegra compact double and it had a 11-28 set. I too wanted something better for hills and age. I was able to put a 11-32 SRAM on it with the same RD. As long as its not cross chained (which I never did anyway) it shifts and performs like its suppose to. The difference in the low end rings of 1-2 teeth plus the advantage of the extra gear if I want it is perfect. I read about all kinds of problems that could be encountered by doing this without going to the longer DR but maybe it's the bike geometry it was as simple as just changing the cassette. Makes my ride much happier!

The zombie apocalypse must be just around the corner! I did switch to a triple: The 52-39 works 98% of the time and in combination with a 12-30 it's a very good senior citizen setup.

I have 11-28 and ride just north of you rdt, in the bay area. I am a weak climber, and get into the lowest gear early and tend to stay there. There are times I wish I had a 32 instead of a 28, but probably what I do need is more work on going up hills. Toughest climbs so far have been Mount Palomar down south, and the road up to Henry Coe. Had to stop a few times for a breather on both, but did peddle all the way up (slowwwwwwly).
