Indoor training is a blast if you have the right situation for it. I use a Kurt Kinetic trainer. It helps me get away from the mind-numbing boredom of riding outside!

I have a Cycleops indoor bike. It's great, can set up to same fit as your road bike.

Not only that , but motorists don't have control of their cars at times . I commuted in cold and snow until a truck almost slid into me.

I switch to studded tires in the winter also. It's a lot like riding a stationary bike, but with a real cool 3D monitor to watch.

Rain and sleet are different things. If it just rains the risks aren't too bad. If the rain freezes when it hits the road... things can get ugly fast. I draw the line at frozen roads.

This is the start of the best riding season in Las Vegas. We suffer though 115 degree heat in the summer. I am just getting back into longer rides. Its nice.

I have a recumbent stationary bike and I can program rides into it,,hills and all.
The seating position is very close to my Tour Easy.

No off season down here In Florida but still,,long rainy weekends, thunder storm days,,I use it,, a little.

Advantage:
No wear and tear on my Bike,
Nothing ever wears out on the stationary,
I don't have to haul my (LWB,67"), (80"overall), bike Into the house bangin on doors,,,etc

I use a 1UP trainer in the winter. I got it used off Craig's List. I like using my own bike(s) instead of the bikes at the fitness center. I can also watch Spinerval training DVDs while riding. I wish our library had them in their catalog!

I have used a Tacx Fortius trainer for the last ten years and do about half of my 6000 miles yearly on the trainer. Online racing, virtual courses and race films all make it bearable. Yesterday I won a Peal Izumi Barrier jacket for winning an online race.

Second day of December here in the frigid Midwest, and it's a bone chilling 75 degrees (Fahrenheit) outside. If all winter stays no lower than the mid to low 40's, I may never put the bicycle up this winter...

Looked up the cycleops bikes - two models? $2199 and $1199 at REI - I guess I'll
stick with my Proform 290 SPX ($300) - I won't say I love it, but I'd rather spend that
kind of money on a road bike.

I was trying to just ride, but more than the rain, the limited daylight has pushed me onto the trainer.
I know I could just get lights and ride, but I'm just not that comfortable out on the road in the dark
with all of the distracted commuters. When its not raining and I can fit it into my schedule, a morning
ride starting in the dark and finishing after sunrise is greatly preferred.

Since I have had them for a long time - pretty much predating DVD's, my training area is set up for VHS spinervals (that is, when I ride the trainer). I just scored a VHS Spinerval on EBay for $3.00 (plus $5.00 shipping). Now I have 3 for variety. That should be plenty.

I started using a kinetic trainer last week. It does the job. I was commuting back and forth to work, but since it I used to get dark early I do not feel safe in the evening darkness. I used do spin class but since my right knee is in line for a total knee replacement in January I can not ride like that now. I was able to get out and ride today, but will use the trainer tomorrow. I guess as long as I do something each day that is all that counts.

I have access to some sort of semi-recumbent stationary torture and psychological degradation device. Unless there is snow and/or ice on the ground and I'm absolutely desperate, I avoid the use of this thing. I prefer riding the roads in the great out of doors even if I look like the Michelin Man when I'm clad in the full monty winter gear.

Recumbents are quite hard for me to get into(as a fitness/gym repair specialist I get to test a lot). Uprights are a little easier, but spin bikes are definitely the most natural. The only upright other than a spin that I would put money toward would be an Expresso S3U since it has steering inputs and a computerized race program with gears. One of the biggest barriers I've had for indoors is wind. If you have a big fan that you can turn on medium or high to feel the air it gets the senses a bit more engaged which helps a lot. Still, given the choice I tend to favor a frozen coat and a little wet than to be indoors.

My wife and I bought a ProForm Tour de France like you see during televised bike races but I've yet to use it due to having such a beautiful Fall here. I may get intimate with it soon, though.

Well this is what we have to ride for the "icy" days and that's after I had to bring it home via bicycle!
It's your basic cheapie, upright exersize machine, nothing fancy basic info. but it's better than just "looking out the window" and whinning! At least I can turn on the FAN and feel the normal So. CO. headwind!

Quite a job bringing that home by bicycle - how did you handle that?

Also, an interesting sign -

DF, actually it wasn't bad, I used a car type tie down strap for the main body, 2 extra-long bungies to hold the handle bars and 2 long bungies to strap the frt. and rear feet to the end's of the trailer body. I have a big plastic tub that attaches to the frame via 2 bolts & fender washers and "wing nuts" for smaller stuff. The exersize bike is a modern/lighter unit and I didn't even have to use the "triple" granny to get it up the hills on the way home. LOL, ya the signs are for AUTO's, the Landlord is a "LD type bicyclist" so I can "park" there anytime I want!
