The attendant shook my by the shoulder and asked 'are you awake?' Said 'yes'. Then he said your heart rate dropped to 38 BPM.
Asked him if that was good. He said that's the lowest we've seen with you old folks.

Now at age 80 and still pedaling 100+ miles a week, I have no idea what my heart rate is, but am still alive and well.
When it quits beating I'll know that I'm a goner!
Pedal on!

But what he was thinking was: "Darn! Wish I had heart like that!"

According to my cardiologist, a young triathlete, hitting your max is not a problem for a healthy heart, but if it causes chest pain or dizziness, don't do it!
I suffer fro paroxysmal a-fib, and as a result my HR will suddenly jump from say 140 to 200. I don't feel anything, but it makes me back off!!
A word of caution: one of our group, a 74 year-old, fit, fast, not an ounce of fat on him, very careful with diet, one-time 24 hour record holder collapsed while waiting to start a ride 3 weeks ago. Heart attack! Fortunately the EMS was there within about 5 minutes and eventually revived him. Family history of heart problems, but he thought diet etc would protect him, so he never got checked out by a cardiologist. He is recovering well, but has three stents.
