Rode my age yesterday

Wanted to do it on my birthday, but did not have the time.
Had to take the van for its' annual Ziebart inspection; so what to do while they have it half the day? Ride around Dayton Ohio.
Anyway, looked down at the computer when I rolled back in to the parking lot, and low and behold, 55.2 miles.

Well done! I am older and I still couldn't do the 55 miles by a long shot. I'm 68 and ride only 10-20 miles. The truth is more often it is 10 to 15 miles at a pretty slow pace.

I did mine on Saturday, two days after turning 60. Threw in 2.9 extra miles just to make it an "official" metric.

Blues Dawg: You just made my day. I've been stuck on a stationary recumbent for the past month since breaking my hip mid July. Worked it up to 20 miles per session, which takes about an hour. With my 57th come and gone last week, the thought of spending 3 hours on the beast to hit my birthday ride was too much to bear. Using the minutes counts formula, I can now say I hit my birthday ride every day of birthday week. Woo hoo!

Congrats on the ride, and belated happy birthday. I did a birthday ride for my 59th last November. Had to cover about 63 miles to make my destination. It was the longest ride I had done for a number of years, but I got 'er done.
Thinking about doing the same ride this year if the weather co-operates. Kinda hard to plan for in November in this part of the world.

That's great, doesn't seem that hard now does it. I've been trying to use my age to raise my activity level. I usually do metric centuries at charity rides,and try to do 60-80 mile days when I tour. So it only seemed logical to start riding my age, 61 miles, 2-3 times a week to be ready for it all. Seemed hard to do at first, now it just seems normal. Oh, I also haven't driven my car since July 30th, that makes a difference, sometimes I'll do 20 miles worth of errands in the morning, ride out to a club ride later and ride back after finishing. You don't accomplish much else, but you sleep well.

What a great idea. I have ridden my age then.
Actually I hit an all time high mileage day for me just this week. I made it 32.37 miles. Now to be honest it took me 3 hours and 2 minutes to do it but I was really happy that I had done it. My next goal is to hit 50 miles. I figure if I just keep riding my distance should increase and my time should decrease. Well at least that is the way I am looking at it. Midnight Shadow.

I also rode my age and then some, on Labor day, The Bike 4 Brains ride here in KC. I wound up doing 81.57 miles that day, my best by far! That beat my previous best by almost double. A special assist goes to my local riding buddy, Mark, who coached me up. I also wore my new 50+ jersey on this ride, and had several people comment positively on it. Thanks again, Bill(qcpmsame)!

I've ridden farther as well. My longest to date this year were back to back 87 milers on the Young's bike tour. But it was nice to just to go that many miles just going out for a ride.

Way to go! To almost double your best is outstanding and gives me hope that I will get there also. Did you have the "new 50+ jersey" made for you as I thing it would be a great jersey to ride with. Well that is if I could fit into it. I go to REI or one of the specialty bike shops and they don't make jerseys for someone my size. I am working on that also. Performance Bike makes jerseys that fit so I have to buy mine there.

I have lost 14.8 pounds in just over a month by riding and also making veg. and fruit smoothies for two meals a day and then having one regular meal per day. My energy is more than it was and I am finally getting more fruit and vegetables into me. I have a long way to go before I will be able to fit into one of the specialty bike shop jerseys but I am working on it. My goal is to get below or to 200 pounds which is where I was some 13 years ago. My weight now wouldn't be so bad if I were over 7 feet tall but at my height my BMI index puts me into the obese area. When I get to 200 I will "only" be overweight. Sounds strange but true. Midnight Shadow

The day and the ride are yours, do what you can as far as a ride and enjoy every minute and every mile, regardless of the distance. Many of us are battling back from health issues and started out with baby steps (baby miles?) then worked up to a comfortable distance or are still improving. You can look back on the day after a while and the memory will make you smile about your fitness and distance then and where it is now. Best of Luck on the ride, when you do it.
