Stuff I bought this week. Not wealthy just spending it all at once......Then I'll be under control.

Don't even know if the NOS late '80s MTB derailleur will work on my Trek 500's other compact double or not but the original 600 EX looks funky with the 46 tooth........Now that $25 (plus shipping but who's counting?) might have been on the verge of oughta control so I'm checking myself until it comes in.

How many things have I bought off of Ebay that I'll probably never use?

More than one so far

OP you call that "eye opening?" My head would explode. I'm just a slacker....2 road bikes, 1 cross bike, prolly 6 shorts and 6 jerseys, 3 pair gloves and that's about it. Oh yeah, 2 sunglasses and 1 helmet.

Its one bicycle, 7 pairs of shorts, 1 pair of bib shorts, 2 pairs of bib tights, 2 pairs of tights (no chamois), 8 short sleeve jerseys, 2 long sleeve jerseys, 2 pairs of cycling shoes, more socks than I can count, 2 helmets, 1 UA long sleeve compression shirt and 2 long sleeve silk shirts. Tools,..... I cannot even begin to count those, but I am positive my 2 floor pumps cost a whole lot less than $450.00 (I'm still alive, Monica would skin me.) I'll skip all the spare parts I have accumulated over the years, they are my emergency parts stash. I keep at least 10 tubes and 3 tires in reserve, that's about it, I think...................

Good job. Putting time and resources into a vintage bike is always justified.

Tires are most important component on the bike. I have the following on hand;

700x50 Schwalbe Marathon Supreme
700x47 Schwalbe Smart Sam
700x40 Schwalbe Marathon Dureme
700x40 Clement X'plor USH
700x38 Schwalbe Marathon Cross
700x38 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper (AKA Voyager Hyper)
700x35 Schwalbe Marathon Winter
700x32 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper (AKA Voyager Hyper)
700x32 Kenda Happy Medium
700x28 Conti Gatorskin
700x28 Vittoria Rubino Tech
700x27 Challenge Parigi-Roubaix
700x25 Vittoria Corsa CX
700x25 Conti Gatorskin
700x23 Conti Gatorskin
700x24 Conti Grand Prix
700x23 Vittoria Rubino

My current favorite everyday tire is the 700x32 Vittoria Randonneur Hyper. As fast as a 700x25 training tire, covers dry gravel and trails as well as a file tread CX tire. Flat resistant, tough and durable. The Challenge Parigi-Roubaix rolls very well and has the smoothest ride. The Vittoria Corsa is fastest and has a very smooth ride.

Are you ever concerned about tire life/deterioration which I am reading more about in the literature?

Only when descending a 45 mph hill ;-)

If tires are indeed like fine wine, Compass Extra Legere are First Growth quality.

I wonder about the 30 year old tubulars in storage but then again the old unused Campy stuff is probably worth something if I dug it out of the attic. My heirs will probably sell it at a yard sale.

BTW, I blame Retro Grouch for his thread about if you only could have one bike, which would it be?
Have a great trip to Italy. I'd love to have an Italian Frame-builder work his magic for me.

I started the summer with 15 bikes that were ready to ride and one frameset, now down to 9 and don't see any way to reduce that number. I gave three to family members and sold three. I keep bikes at three locations so at any one point it doesn't seem like there are to many.
I also donated most spare parts to local Yellow Bike.
The problem now is I am thinking a dropbar cross bike with disc brakes would be nice!

I was hoping an "inventory" wasn't going to be a requirement. So far, based on those posted, I'm not out of line --maybe a little more junk heavy.

I don't yet do any accurate restoring --I much prefer the "resto-mod" style of putting newer stuff on older frames to get a ride that is just exactly what I'm looking for (a constantly changing target).

I tend to separate my stuff into two categories; "good stuff," and "~usable stuff." (I guess I also have some bins of junk-stuff I would not ever likely use --but could give away or use for freebie repairs for friends and neighbors)

Rather than keeping an inventory, I like to create "mind-maps" for projects. I'll try to dig up a couple I've used, but the drawing below is a quick example of what they are. That way I'm always looking for what to acquire next --to complete a project.

[dozen bikes, half dozen frames, catagorized parts drawers, wheels wheels wheels, tools tools tools]

I get a new bike, I set it up, fit it to me, make my changes.
The pile of changed out parts I throw in a box and donate to a church group who fixes up bikes for poor old guys and kids who cannot afford one.

I refuse to be a pack rat, plus if I need a part I gave away, well now,, I have an excuse to go to the bike shop and buy more stuff !
