Quite an achievement, but I can't resist pointing out the irony of the two bolded phrases. Just for starters, where are the strings (violin-bass)?

I know, I know... I need to get more instruments added to my collection.

So many instruments, so little time!

I find meeting friends for coffee or lunch can be effective if time or circumstances don't allow bike rides .

No doubt mental and physical fitness are linked. But, as illustrated by some very physically strong on one side and severely physically challenged people on the other the link is more like a rubber band than a rigid rod. No doubt they are mutually reinforcing but not mutually dependent in all cases.

Chess. Over at chess.com I've gotten my ass kicked by people on six continents. There's a Team Anartica. If I lose to one of them that would make seven. Check out my signature line.

That's interesting. I too play chess. It's a useful exercise in humility, even if one can spell Antarctica.

Agree biking and exercise stimulates brain along with riding with others.

Play classical piano (Chopin, Schubert, Beethoven etc), attend concerts and sometimes play with my wife (world class musician), shoot and develop photographs, read books, serve on Boards etc. Mentor adults including my children when they allow it.

Lots to do even into retirement.

I stared and stared at that and just couldn't remember the correct spelling.

Go join chess.com (free) and challenge me to a game. My moniker is "hapless_fool". I open with the English if I'm white except if I think you suck I go Fried Liver.

If I'm black I play the French defense.

This is the first reply to the question, and I think it's the best one. I'll add learning or playing a musical instrument to the list.

I am not an advocate of on-line puzzles--I've been observing the results of this activity for the past five years and it breaks my heart to tell you that they do not work, despite how adamant the participant is at how much they are helping.

I believe that longevity depends a little bit more on mental fitness than physical fitness. I've seen dozens more people live past 90 who were less physically active than those who were. There is a dramatic difference, however, in the quality of the years after 70 which favors the physically active.

Like they say, you don't quit playing because you get old, you get old because you quit playing. I hope I die before I get old.

Many of us are in the camp where we realize there are much worse things than death. We realize that everything including our planet has a life span, some long and some short. Our challenge is to put as much quality into each of ours as we can. I have always believed in Quality over Quantity as it pertains to life. But, that does not appear to be the prevailing opinion.

I asked the question so I suppose I should give my response:
>My physical activity is a matter of record to anyone who wants to look up my past posts. I no longer backpack and hope to be back at scuba in a short while.
>I am resurrecting my computer activity. Setting up our new computers and their network. Learning a new computer programing language. Converting one of the old computers to a different operating system. For those who know: The new machines are Android for the smartphones and Windows 8.1 for the PCs. Going to put one of the old PCs over to Linux.
>I have been a Volunteer Examiner for Amateur Radio licensing for several years. I don't get called to work at that much any more. But, getting back to the detailed level of the service and hobby is one of my activities.
>I am a voracious reader. Mainly for escape. But, as needed, to learn new and wonderful things. It is amazing what one can learn by reading books written by people who vehemently disagree with you.
>I am blessed to be appreciated by much younger folks who come seeking my input into their life decisions. The philosophy I follow when giving that advice is that I am providing ingredients and maybe some seasoning to the pot of stew they are cooking. But, they are the cook of their own stew. They get it.
