Any UK Brompton rider like to swap their S stem for my M stem & bars?
Hi all.
Just bought a near mint 2013 M6L and realised I should have gone for an S.
If any UK Brompton S rider is contemplating a more upright riding position maybe we could swap stems and bars?
S to M will require longer brake and gear cables, not exactly rocket science.
My stem is black, not fussed about swap colour, can easily respray.
Thanks and seasons greetings.
Mark

Looking at the relative heights an H mast will be good too , put a straight or low riser MTB bar in it. (hinge is just up a little higher )

Yes, SJS is only 20 miles from me and I'm a regular customer. But with 5 other bikes I'm trying to avoid having to spend any more money on my largely stateside only use bike.
One option are their Thorn MK2 65mm riser bars on my M stem which will give an equivalent height to an S bar, but I don't want to discover that I have to cut down the Ergon GP3 biokork grips Santa is delivering next week. They state 190mm useable straight bar length but this is based on a width of 620mm rather than the Brompton S bar span of 520mm. If I cut them back to 520mm I'd have to cut the grips too which I don't want to do.
I had bought a used S stem on eBay but the seller didn't realise it was actually an M. Fortunately I took a tape measure when I went to collect.
Having bought straight bars already from SJS, a stem swap would be so much easier!

Though I did a reverse conversion, I put a Tioga R60 riser bar on my S stem and I had plenty of room for my Ergon grips, though not the GP3. As you mentioned you could install a riser bar on your stem and get it to the height of the S bar.
You could always post on the Yahoo Brompton Group and look for a trade.

You could saw off the top , add a Slot and a QR band clamp, put in a smaller tube and put a Threadless stem on it,
Have an adjustable height bar as a Result.
Fabrication.. Steve Parry is one I've heard of that is big on modifying Bromptons
If you went to any of the BWC meets you may have seen some of his Bikes
Like a Yellow 2 Brompton based tandem, you can fold, stand up and stow in A closet.

Hi Barnstormer
I have a black S-type stem from my Mercton (merc frame, brompton everything-else) going spare.
I changed to a clear-lacquer H-type stem for a little more height a couple of years ago, so it's currently sitting in the shed unused.

I don't have bars for it and it's definitely 'used' - mechanically it's absolutely fine but the gloss black powder-coat is a little worn from use.
It doesn't seem to have the original bolt at the top to secure the bars, but this is easy to replace or swap with the one you have.
The folding hinge is solid, it has a tidy tightening handle and the quill-expander is all fine too.
I don't really need a swap as I'm happy with my setup - but I'm more than happy to offer this to you for free as I'm likely never going to re-fit it.
How does just covering the cost of P+P only sound?
