Recently I purchased the ritchey breakaway frame to replace my 5-year old montague folder, and found the accompanying case looks quite practical (Compared to my monstrous full-size bike case which won't fit most trunks)

I have a separable moulton for my wife but have not travelled with it separated. I am looking for a right sized hard case (Like a pelican case) that can hold separated moulton.

Anyone out there who traveled with separated moulton bike?

I have used a Dahon Airporter to transport my Moulton TSR. It's semi-hard sided suitcase with lots of padding. The TSR also survived a UPS shipping experience in that case.

Does TSR fit in dahon airporter? I thought it won't...
How much do you have to disassemble the bike? A photograph of packed TSR will be welcome.

Well if you check brother lexm's post here he seems to have got his TSR2 into a Dahon Airporter.

Post #5 in that thread shows how I did it, step by step. It involves removing both the front and rear wheels, as well as the seatpost. I imagine it would go much easier on a Moulton without mudguards (unlike mine), but note that I got mine in without removing the mudguards.

It fits with lots of room to spare. In addition to the bike, I had a tent, sleeping bag, and week's worth of clothes. No problem at all!

I have the large Dahon Airporter. I think they make a smaller sized one now.

Can anyone give me rough inner dimension of the airporter case?
I want to check whether TSR will fit hard cases for S&S separable bikes (Which is slightly more expensive than airporter but a lot more rugged I think)

The Dahon Airporter's exterior dimensions are: 690mm (26") x 850mm (33.5") x 350mm (13.75"). I'd take about 1.5" off each to get the interior dimensions.

Before you dismiss the Airporter, I found its depth (the 13.75" measurement) to be a great help because I could add extra layers of padding (cardboard, towels, the included foam/nylon sheets) to the outside of the bike and between the bike halves. For what it's worth, the bike came out of the flight back from California completely unscathed.

I note on the Dahon website two developments that may be of interest. First, they have a new, 2011 Airporter boasting a reinforced frame and a handle more like regular rolling luggage. Second, they seem to have an Airporter II intended for their 26"-wheeled bikes.

This is 73.25 linear inches. Many airlines have a maximum of 62 inches. I know going over the limit by a little bit goes unnoticed, but that's a *lot*.

I have a customer who flies with his TSR-9 in a Samsonite Flite 31 .. it's the same style case that Bike Friday uses.. some disassembly required ..

The samsonite case looks quite well built and surprisingly cheap (As low as $128, I thought samsonite is a expensive brand...)
It has the size of 31*21*12" or 64 linear inches. It is a bit smaller than dahon case with 33.5*26*13.75" though.

Are there any other similar suitcase with four caster wheels? I found it vastly more convenient to push 4-wheeled cases around than pulling 2-wheeled ones.

I put my Moulton in that Samsonite Flite and I thought it too much work.

I’d have a hard time putting a Moulton into a Dahon case... it just feels so wrong
.... although there may be a security advantage.... people would be less likely to try and steal a case with Dahon written on it

Is the Dahon Airporter not considered oversize & airlines charge more for, especially European airlines & onLong-haul routes?

The Moulton TSR can fit in a Samsonite Flite but isn't it fiddly to have to remove the rear dérailleur.
