Patents I should be aware of when buling a frame
Hi Forum
How serious are the bike frame building guarded by patents?
If I build a frame with BB90 , integrated headset , thru axle , or maybe the frame angles are the same as one of the big producers ( by chance) . If I then later sell this frame , am I in trouble??
I understand the BB30 is a socalled open standard , so everyone can use it ?
hope some one can enlightening me
rgds

most of the patents you have to worry about are related to suspension. If you aren't building a bike with a suspension, you should be ok. Angles really aren't patentable. If you use bolt-on parts, then you are unlikely to be violating a patent. I'm sure there are frame related patents for you to violate, mostly aero related. Don't go down to the specilaized dealer and copy a really good idea from one of their new bikes, it's likely to be patented.

Also in the end patents are about $. Are you building frames is such a volume that the patent holder is being hurt (in sales, $)? If not then even if you were violating a patent you'd likely be under their radar. Not that I suggest stealing patent ideas. Andy.

If you're just building one frame you have nothing to worry about. It would cost any company far more than it's worth to just look at your frame and send a legal notice. Even Specialized wouldn't bother.
