Kind, came in a race goodie bag and was good.
Going to try the Epic Bison Bacon Cranberry bar and see how that works on a slower-long ride.

I'm not any kind of protein bar connoisseur but I heard a while back that Kind bars were the most popular by sales figures. Any one heard of them?

Got some of the Cliff bars, and tried one (oatmeal, raisin walnut) midway on my 40 mile ride this morning. While it did seem to boost my energy somewhat, I can't say it was all that tasty. I'll try several more though before I come to a conclusion.

A much better thing to carry on your ride would be some type of a protein drink with about 20-30 grams protein, preferably whey because it's easiest and fastest to digest and some bananas or dried fruits. Much better then overpriced bars.

Clif bars can be a little heavy/dense. Lara bars aren't bad, I like the PB&J flavor in particular.

Granola or if I'm going hard...I drink honey. Fast carbs. Works great for the 60-110 mi rides. Cbf hauling pounds of food though a mobile picnic doesnt sound bad

I bring those little single serving tubs of peanut butter they have at buffets and cafeterias and a brownish banana. Both provide pretty instant energy boosts.

I've always heard and read that you want carbs (energy) when riding. Protein and a few carbs are for the post-ride snack.
I take a Hammer bar on my rides. My favorite is Oatmeal Apple. They're all organic too.

Cliff Bars
Honey Stinger Waffles or
Trader Joe's mini stroopwaffles (4 = 1 Honey Stinger and are the perfect bite size)
Mejoole dates (75 calories EACH) from Costco - don't forget to take the pits out
Not sure if the 40 calories per 8 oz (1/2 scoop) that exists in my Scratch Labs drink counts or not. I carry 66 oz (2 x 21 oz and 1 x 24 oz Camelbak Chill bottles) when I ride 4 hours or so with my club on the weekends. I put about 1.25 - 1.3 scoops in the 21 oz and 1.5 scoops in the 24 oz bottles. I tend to drink 1 bottle every hour to hour and a half. These bottles alone equate to about 4 scoops of mix = 320 calories alone. I always eat a good breakfast before.
If I am drinking Scratch Labs drink mix, is it even necessary to eat for 4-5 hour or less rides?

Haven't been on any rides long enough to take along food this year, but my pre-ride meals will often consist of Pop-Tarts and orange juice. Sometimes it'll be BP&J and orange juice.

Fig Newtons, cheap and tasty. You can eat 'em even if you crush them.

I'm gonna assume none of you carb hounds are diabetic. If you gotta carb up you might want to consider limiting yourself to complex carbs as they are less glycemic than simple carbs. And limit your sugars too.

Honey Stinger Gingersnap Waffle Always have loved ginger and these just work for me half way through a 20-30 mile ride.

What's your favorite Protein Bar or Snack to take on a ride?
Ate a very, very light breakfast the other morning (small bowl of cereal) and after about 25 miles I started running out of gas. Low energy with about 15 miles to get back, and the monster hill to climb that I mentioned in another post.
Could have sure used a tasty snack that provides good energy. Any suggestions? Lets take both benefits and taste in mind, if you don't mind...

Oatmeal raisin cookies
Granola bars of various sorts
Salted almonds
Dried apricots

If I do a bar, it is a Builder bar by cliff. I like the texture and taste better than the standard cliff bars.

peanut butter sandwich. if im feeling frisky I'll put some banana on it. Occasionally the wife will make a batch of granola bars. If I am doing enough miles to want "sport food" aka gels or whatever, I prefer honey stinger, Gu is ok, but I recently had some sort of energy gummy that I thought was really good. Also have had chia bars, and those were pretty delicious IMO, though pricey. I would rather eat real food though than gels...I hold off for 60+ mile rides before I break into that type of "food." I'll eat something every ~20 miles (and won't eat at all during the ride unless I am going for 30+)

As for those that eat the Slim Jims, Really? I guess if I was racing I could do it as I might get a little extra wattage in the form of propulsion. Truly, those things are awful. They would rot my innards out.
I typically take 3 things with me food wise. A Cliff Bar, A Gel Pack and a pack of Gomps. I usually make it through the ride without the Gomps but occasionaly I need them if it is a longer ride or if my energy level is down.

My new favorite cycling food is the pureed fruit in the little pouches. Smuckers brand is my favorite but even the store brand is good. they are marketed as little kids snacks, but they are easy to consume (you kind of drink it) and they taste good and are easy to transport with no danger of crushing.
for bars l like the Lara.

I also eat Clif Mojo Bars for variety, and may have have Clif blueberry crisp when I need carbs for ease of digestion or energy.
