I have a convenience store a short distance from my condo. When I bicycle to the store I ride on the sidewalk. Coming back home, I ride in the street. Saves me from having to cross the multi-lane street twice and there's rarely anybody else using the sidewalk. Why would anyone do it differently?

There are many reasons that will tempt you to ride on the sidewalk, especially in Miami. 1, 4, and 7 are very real threats. Also, many of the roads are deteriorated to the point where it is difficult to maintain speed while in the saddle.
