There's also the abandoned PA turnpike over on the other side of the state. (Around Pittsburgh) It definitely has a "ghost town" theme to it with the underpasses and what not. IIRC they filmed a few movies on the stretch of road.
EDIT: I'm wrong, it's right outside of breezewood.

I've read about the Turnpike, myself. I always get a little excited when I see abandoned asphalt or grade going off into the countryside.

The film "The Road" had some scenes filmed there. Definitely has that post-apocalypse, haunted feel to it.

I did say I would get pictures, I just didn't know when. I finally took the time this morning to get down there, and even rode around town a bit to see some of the old iron.

Riding around the back roads of Eastern PA, there's a lot of corn, farms, and the like.
There's the occasional old/abandoned barn or house...maybe an old isolated factory or kiln. But not an entire town or anything like that.
Still, it can be very quiet and isolating out there.

If I were to guess, I'd say that less than a dozen people live within five miles of the intersection, and it could easily be half that. The abundance of graffiti indicates it's not an unpopular place for vandalism, and while almost all of the buildings are open, I don't bother to approach them.
Makes for a good evening ride, though.

The big town of Penwell is one I recognized well. I end up in that neck of the woods every year as we hunt just up the road from thier towards Crane. We jump off interstate at Penwell and hang a left. Camp is 20 minutes out by the refinery.
