How about another Chicago area meet-up and social ride?
Hey all,
We had a lakefront ride in the city a few years ago which turned out to be pretty fun and a great opportunity to meet some of the local CV enthusiasts. How about a ride on 08 Oct 11? We could meet at 10:00 at the Foster beach house? If anyone's interested, they could also meet at my house beforehand (if they're driving in and want a bathroom break or need to tweak the bike).
A social ride to the bottom of the path and back is about 33 miles (I think?). So, if we start at 10:00, we should finish up in time for a post ride lunch and beer? Last time, the weather was great and we went to Moody's Pub for bleu cheese burgers and beer on the patio.
The pace would be varied and social. Faster riders could race to the bottom of the path and back. More relaxed riders could either take their time and do the full route or, because it's a "there and back" route, could turn back before the bottom of the path and still all meet up for lunch. The path can be hectic compared to a rural ride, but the view is top notch and it's impossible to get lost (keep the lake on your left heading down and on the right heading back north ).
I've already spoken with a few locals who are interested. Let me know if you'd like to join us. Details (and photos) from the previous ride are at:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...cago+bibliobob
Map (one way) here:
https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/26970092
Hope you all can make it,
Bob

Pending, you know, things coming up...I'm in and I'll say Diane, Mrs Al is too, so she can show off her Bob Jackson. She is not fast but looks great going by. I think you're kind of a fan of all things English, right Bob? Possibly Jack would join us, but he's all of 15 now and probably too cool to ride with his old parents. Funny how that changes between 13 and 15.

Dang, if we hadn't scheduled the MPLS ride for the next weekend I'd be tempted to leave here at 2:00a and meet you for the day!
Let's see...
2:00a-9:00a drive to Chicago.
9:00-9:30, short nap.
10:00-12:30 ride.
12:30-2:00 lunch.
2:00-9:00p drive home.
I've done crazier!

Where's the bottom of the path, from Foster Beach? Science and Industry? South Shore Park (about 75th)?
And Moody's is in my old stomping grounds, Senn High School area. I hope I can get free for this!

We usually turn around at around 65th St. From house, that's about a 40 mile rt ride. From Foster, it should be around 32-34?
Hope that both of you guys can make it!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm about 50% sure I can make it. I'll let you know when I know for sure.
And then I have to decide which bike I'm going to pull out for this ride.

Does a 2011 Raleigh disable me from joining? Otherwise, it's a 1998 Specialized Hard Rock mtb. Or, I can claim that I used to ride my brother's schwinn that he rode daily to high school in 1975-76...

Wow, that ride was two years ago! Of course we've had more rides since then, lakeshore and elsewhere, but that was a perfect, idyllic fall day along one of the world's great cityscapes. Also it was a great opportunity to meet some fellow enthusiasts. I hope this one turns out so well.

Ride what you like. I will probably have a friend or two there that won't be riding vintage (especially our better halves ). The more, the merrier...

Well, I'm hoping to make it. My daughter is now officially overdue with our first grandchild, though, so can't make any plans at the moment.. Sounds like a great ride!
We rode the Lakefront last Labor Day (2010) as a family ride, and it was an absolute zoo. This is a better choice of days, provided it isn't raining.

I'm out. UW Badger hockey opening that weekend and me with season tickets.
Now if you make it the 1st or 15th, I'm in.

Have you heard of www.thechainlink.org (a social networking site for chicago cyclists)? They have a calendar where this ride could be posted. You would likely get several riders from that site. It is a very active site.

For the first time in 30 years, I don't own a vintage bike! Can I come out anyway?

I definitely have something in your size range. Might have to make some tweaks though. Why don't you stop by the house about 09:00, so that we have time to make adjustments.
