my wife rides in a horse event called endurance. She rides Arabian horses which are built like marathoners Typical ride is 50 miles per day. She's done a 100. I pit crew for her. Over pretty rough terrain (up and down 3000-4000ft) she averages 12 to 15 mph. A conditioned horse will smoke any bike rider (including Lance) going uphill, they just keep going and going at a fast trot. Downhill you got to slow down unless it's sorta smooth and a low grade (less than 5?) or you will wreck their legs. They will jump low obstacles easily, but will spook at a gum wrapper and you'll have a rodeo.

Without a doubt, the horse would win.

How about doing a mod. on a tandem & training a horse to ride it !! though it may need a jockey on the horse with reins attached to the handle bars or perhaps one of those 2wheel sulky things like they use in trotting races, behind

I would also bet that an elite marathoner could beat a horse over 22 miles on an actual marathon course (no river fording etc)
In reading about the William Hill Man vs Horse event, I got the impression that the human times were pretty good. The runners may not have been elite, but they were not bad. I also think that the horse opposition was just decent local horses. A fair comparision is not an elite marathoner vs an average horse but an elite marathoner vs a horse that is elite for that same distance. That would be hard because I don't think they have much in the way of big organized races for horses over that distance. As it is, I think the William Hill event shows that the horses are faster but not by all that much.

Yea, the human times weren't bad, but the winner of Will Hill Man wouldn't finish in the top 20 in a large marathon. The difference in time between first and 20+ place would be enough to overtake the horse I believe.

"I also think that the horse opposition was just decent local horses."

I'm not sure how you came to this conclusion, but the horse that won last year, Druimghigha Shemal, had been trained specifically for distance over steep, hilly countryside. Past that, I've never heard of an elite marathon distance horse. But it's a big strange world out there.

"As it is, I think the William Hill event shows that the horses are faster but not by all that much."

On a cross country course with non-professional marathon runners, yes. But like I said above, I'd bet on an elite runner over an actual marathon course.

Used to be a Man vs Horse vs Bike event in Wales a while back.

Horse won. Then Bikes had to drop out as event took place on bridleways on which bike racing is illegal
