I would like to get your advice on what bike would best for me. I will be using it mainly for road and dirt track use – some rocks and stuff that will get in the way but no serious climbing or downhill runs will be done. I’m looking at around the £300 sort of mark. I’ve been looking at the Trek 4300 and GT avalanche bikes. If anyone knows where I can get these cheap that would of course be great. Mostly though I want a light bike that holds well when I push down on the pedals – I like to stay in high gear a lot and get some speed going! I’ve mostly just had everyday MTB’s before. Now I’m looking to get a little more serious and go on longer runs (for the day). Hardtails seem the way forward. Anyway – any ideas on what bike would fit the bill?

Great to hear you want to take it a little more serious. I have a hardtail which I use for all sorts of different cycling and it works great.

I don't know much about the specific bikes you mention, but some things that may help:
- Call around or look online for 2007 models, they will be discounted and you will get a better bike for your money (e.g. on Evanscycles the 2007 Trek 4300 is at £270 but in limited frame sizes).
- Try and get the best frame you can because you can replace the other parts over time - I normally look at the frames as they go up the range for a specific manufacturer and often you will find bikes that have the same frame as the more expensive ones in their range.
- At this pricepoint the front forks on some bikes will just be heavy springs that will bounce you down the road. It is worth looking for reviews specfically on the forks of any bikes you are considering.
