Anyone use a air filter/breathing mask when riding?

Hi there

I live in the DC area, and have to commute a heavily trafficked area of the city on my way to work, from Maryland.

The air has good and bad days, most of the time bad, and I was looking for ideas on a air filter/breathing mask to buy.

If you have any, please let me know.

Thanks so much!

If it is bad air you are looking to filter (Car funes etc) Then anything you can carry on the bike won't work. But if it is just dirt and road muck- then a neckerchief is as good as a $20 well marketed filter mask. And more comfortable.

Thanks. Well actually it is car fumes, and ciggarette smoke, things like that, I want to avoid. But thanks for the feedback - Dan

Depending the cartridges, you can filter out VOCs and particulate matter, so exhaust fumes and diesel smoke should be well within the range of something like this.

:)ensen.

Most of the things you could get to filter out what you seem to be trying to filter out will also make it harder to suck in air. As long as you are loafing along that wouldn't be a problem but on a hot day if you are going to climb any hills at all you might as well get ready to walk if you use a filtered mask. Put it to a test, put on a painters mask and then try to run 200 yards. See if it is harder with or without the mask.
