GF wingra vs. Trek 7.1/7.2 ?
Hello,
I posted this in the hybrid section but thought posting it here might get some great replies from people who might not visit that section of the forum...
I have been lurking around a bit while in the market for my first bike in some 10 odd years. I have tried quite a few and the 2 bikes I enjoyed the most are the GF Wingra and Trek 7.1, The GF Wingra seems to be just a faster over all bike so I am some what leaning towards this bike. Unfortunately my girlfriend is riding with me and naturally is a slower rider so speed is not really necessary. My question here is basically what is the better quality bike? I am not familiar with the terms the guy at the bike shop was explaining so I have been trying to find it on line. Is the extra 80 dollars for the GF Wingra worth it in your opinion? I have always rode BMX bikes as a kid so the upright feel of the Trek seemed off, but I do have some back issues in the lower back region. I am only going to bike ride casually on the weekends, not going to commute to work. Or I can even get the Trek 7.2 FX for the same price if the quality of the bike is really worth it and better than the Wingra.

Take it from someone who has built and worked one every bike you listed, the Wingra and FX are the same bike with different paint and decals. Compare wheels and components.

So that answers the question about the 7.1, I will give the 7.2 another shot and compare to the Wingra one last time before I buy the bicycle.

What are the main differences between a Wingra and FX 7.2, also which one is lighter?
I test drove the Wingra the other day and fell in love with it, but today I found a CL listing for a FX 7.2 for $100. It has flat tires and a rusted chain.
I am debating to either buy a brand new wingra or get the FX 7.2 tuned up.

$100 is a great deal for that bike...if you know how to work on bikes.
The second I see "rusted chain" I think it's been poorly maintained (kept outside too) and probably needs an overhaul, not just a tune-up. Don't be surprised if it needs $50+ in parts right off the bat. New chain, obviously, maybe new cassette, cables. The tires may be in fine shape and just need new tubes. Could probably stand to be stripped down, cleaned up, greased, and re-assembled. That might take a pretty penny if you let the local bike shop do it and you might end up finding one in better shape used for that money. Hard to say without seeing the bike in question.
