2007 trek 7.3 vs 2010 trek 7.1
What do you think the overall best option would be between the two. The main uses for the bike will be commuting and fitness.

As KungPao suggests, all being equal the 7.3 is a better bike. To really answer your question though there are a few things that need to be clarified. Are they both new? How do they compare price wise? Can you get either in your size?
I will say this, the 7.3 looks to be a more sporty setup then the 7.1 which would be a more relaxed ride.

The current 7.3 is very much the better machine. The components will last a long time with good maintenance. The biggest reason to avoid a 7.1, if you are going to ride it a bunch, is the 7.3 FX - whether a 2007 or current - is the frame material. They today and 2007 had "alpha-Black" aluminum frames. These are stronger and will last you. Lighter weight also.
My real suggestion is, if you have limited funds, to look into the 7.2 FX. This is the first year the Trek 7.2 FX has a "alpha-Black" aluminum frame. Here:

The 7.5 FX has been the "gold standard" on this series for several years. This has changed. The 7.3 FX has now made it a proverbial coin-toss with the 7.5 FX.
Best advice I got - but ride as many bikes as you can. The one you like the best is your bike. Sleep on it!
Do let us know? Thanks.
