Yes, I've done this with stretchy nylon running shorts and it can be very comfortable- plus you get a pocket or two that way.

Just because a lot of cycling clothes are skin tight doesn't mean that they have to be worn as the outer layer.
Half of the reason for being skin-tight is to reduce friction between the fabric and the skin. You can cover your lycra bib shorts with baggy gym shorts and you'll still be much less likely to suffer chafing.

Theres two routes to go pretty much. Your normal shorts over a pair of biking shorts which is fine or you can buy what appear to be regular shorts and have biking shorts inside attached or some can be removed. https://www.aerotechdesigns.com/baggy...orts.htm#rowdy

For me it's sleeveless tee and cargo shorts in the summer, fleece hoodie and pants in winter. I'm not fast enough yet for spandex but am getting faster. Passing about as much as I get passed now, except for the sensitive spandex guys who don't want to get passed. Methinks spandex squeezes the ego too much.

I like tight cloths that fit my body. I am so tired of the b-aggin and saggin be it street cloths or cycling cloths or any kind of cloths. I am not in any gangs, don't do hip hop or rap and refuse to where fashions dictated by that mindless crap, especially on my bicycle.

going to work- the pants I plan on wearing all day, usually jeans or shorts (it's all downhill and effortless)
coming home - I change into spandex capris/shorts
running errands - street wear, spandex, or my neon pink leggings with some baggy shorts over top
bombing around being awesome on my mixte - skirts
I'm actually going out tonight to expand my wardrobe now that it's winter.

It is very liberating to not have to gear up to go ride your bike. I'm enjoying not being a "lycratard" all the time.
You can look at a lot of the urban gear from makers like Chrome, Swrve and Levi's commuter line.

I think that the OP should just wear skater clothes until his experience tells him differently. Fashion is important to him right now, but if he rides long enough or hard enough maybe he'll learn from chafing, or get tired of hearing the flapping of loose clothes. If he ever does long rides in a roadie crouch he'll learn about proper cut and coverage of cycling clothes as he feels the draft on his plumber's crack.
OTOH, maybe he'll never ride at a level where the proper clothing would make a difference. Then it would have been just a waste of money.
Me? I'm nothing much to look at in spandex, but wear it because it's what works for me.
There's nothing like the experience of getting a bee up the leg of loose shorts to change one's perspective on tight clothes.

I wore "cycling clothes" for decades, starting back when wool was "in". I even wore rubberized skinsuits for kilo and pursuit on the track. It's just been in the last few years that I've discovered I can be comfortable on a bike without dressing like a tropical insect in heat.

Frankly, any of the "problems" he may encounter are not really any big deal. Except for the bee thing, which happened to my brother in law. I'd expect that to be a rarity though. Besides, the OP has written nothing much about his riding, just his preferred style, so we're all just projecting our own assumptions.
