What? No Kickstand Included On A New Trek Bike?

I purchased a new Trek Navigator WSD 1.0 for a relatives birthday present today, and when I got home, I couldn't believe that the kickstand was missing. So I quickly called the salesman to tell him about it. And I was told kickstands are not included on new bikes. That's crazy. Anybody else know about this issue with new Trek bikes?

I have four bikes and none of them have a kickstand and I wouldn't want one either. This forum is full of bike pics and if you look closely you might notice very few are sporting the kickstand.

I know it's been that way since at least 2008 - and I suspect for a while longer. When I bought my 7100 (in 2008) that was the case. I bought a cheapie kickstand and they mounted it for me. No big deal.

Less is more.

Unless you want your bike to stand on its own.

Haven't seen the need for a kickstand on any of my bikes in recent decades.

Easy enough to add one to most, but not all, bikes. If a person wants one.

I bought a Trek 7.2FX for my grandson last March and the kickstand was an extra $10.
When I worked at a bike shop kickstands were always extra. Not many bike manufacturers include a kickstand on the bike.

FYI: none of my bikes have ever had a kickstand.

Like many have said very few Giants, Specialized, Jamis, Trek and many others have kickstands unless you order one or buy an after market one.

New Trek Navigators all go out the door with kickstands on them out here.
this is a Store Management choice. no they dont come with one, from Trek.
[one reason is they are on the KS when displayed on the sales floor]

But the Belleville OTOH does have one .

My Koga Miyata World Tour (Rohloff) WTR .. came with 2 kickstands .
special order OEM batch of Tubus Ergo racks have bits to mount a Kickstand
under the left side, to support the pannier load and not let the wheel roll,
and cause bike to fall over, pivoting on the other prop stand..

It is after all a Load carrying self contained touring person's bike.

Most bikes haven't come with kickstands for a really long time. I bought a hybrid in the 90s. IMO, there is nothing wrong with putting a kickstand on a new bike if weight isn't a priority.

If you are on this site you are at least a wee bit of a bike snob and no bike snob would have a kickstand. No one. Get it?

Un less you are also being practical and its not a performance bike.

I like being able to pack and unpack my camping gear where I camp.
even if there is no tree for 100M..

US customers are made to accessorize commuter bikes
more than the Dutch and Germans.

There they are sold complete
racks lights a bell mudguards a lock and a kickstand.

I just checked The Rules and found nothing about a kickstand.
So it must be OK.

It's a lot easier to lean a bike up. Plus they take less room and are out of the way. They also aren't prone to falling or getting knocked over.

When bikes used to have them, one of my pet peeves on MUPs were people blocking the paths for everyone by leaving thie bikes right in the middle f the trail.

Back in the old days at the shop (1980 or so) kickstands were usually not included.

It was mentioned above that all the other big companies still provide kickstands. Are we sure about that? Menaing, the company actually ships a kickstand in the box with the bike from the factory to the LBS. Not, the LBS adding a kickstand to the bike before the time of sale?

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the large companies have ceased providing kickstands years ago.

I don't remember seeing that post that most large companies still ship kickstands. I do have a small LBS close to me that deals in cruisers, Vintage, touring and Bents and some of their bikes do have kickstands but I suspect they are added by the owner.

If you have a reserved space for your bike on the wall, it's easier. However I don't. I usually have to move stuff around so that touring cyclists staying with me have a place to lean their bike on the wall of my garage. I can park any of my bikes in the middle of my garage because I don't need to lean them up on anything.

I also find that flat bar bikes a little more difficult to lean against the wall due to the fact that the handlebars necessetate turning the front wheel one way or another. Drop bars don't have this problem though.

I have a flat bar bike, and when I park under the stairwell at work the kickstand makes it so much easier.

If it helps, I didn't put a kickstand on my new trike

For parking bikes at home: https://feedbacksports.com/shop/RAKK-...Black-P17.aspx
Usually sells for $35-40.

I believe the post you're referring to is the one below...

Kickstands are largely an optional item. Some bikes do come with them, generally as part of a package. I'll use the Giant Escape as an example. The Escape City comes with a kickstand, fenders, and a rear rack, while all of the other models in the series doesn't offer any of those as standard.

Navigators at least have a plate to mount one there if you choose .

Surly LHT should also use a plate ,instead of a tube bridge,
given Lots of unsupported camping-cycle tourists
put a Kickstand on anyhow.. .

yea they would ridicule one on your Colnago..

They weren't optional until they were taken away during the MT. Bike craze in the 90's where their presence was a legitimate hazard to the rider. Since then it's another excuse for the companies to bled a few more dollars from most the people that aren't competitive racers. Of course the companies and many of the LBS, are more than willing to sell you the myth that you are in need professional level gear and equipment, but most of us don't - and those that know that we aren't getting competitive with our bikes like kick stands.

Personally I'm tired of my son's kickstandless bike knocking over my bike in the garage when he gets lazy and doesn't put his away properly, which since he is 13 is almost every time he rides.

Many bikes don't come with kickstands, or fenders, or lights, or racks or locks. The bike shop makes money selling you those items, quite often more than they make on the bike itself.
