If you have a reserved space for your bike on the wall, it's easier. However I don't. I usually have to move stuff around so that touring cyclists staying with me have a place to lean their bike on the wall of my garage. I can park any of my bikes in the middle of my garage because I don't need to lean them up on anything.
I also find that flat bar bikes a little more difficult to lean against the wall due to the fact that the handlebars necessetate turning the front wheel one way or another. Drop bars don't have this problem though.
I have a flat bar bike, and when I park under the stairwell at work the kickstand makes it so much easier.
If it helps, I didn't put a kickstand on my new trike
