Pinion ... competition for Rohloff?
I just now stumbled upon this Pinion gear box at Koga's Signature site.
Has this been discussed here? (We only live once ... and it's only money. I'm interested.)
I forgot to add a link ... https://pinion.eu/en/

Thing is,most frames that can use an IGH can run a Rohloff, while the Pinion requires a special frame. Also looks like you need to use their cranks as well. Plus, they're only OEM(see #4 ):

From the specs:
"18 real gears with even steps of 11.5%."
"Overall Gear Ratio 636%"
Dayum!

It seems very well constructed. I like the comment they made that an internal hub creates an uneven distribution on the bike. I've noticed this on the Nexus 7 and almost all hub bikes with the exception of the 3 speed.
They really need for someone to create a website that's more in english if they want to sell in the US.

You cannot retro fit a frame you have , you have to buy a Custom bike with a frame built around The Pinion.. (Koga Obviously did)
USA/CDN.. You can Buy one of them thru Peter White cycles if you want the Tout Terrain Explore ..as He has the exclusive NA distributorship of that German Builder.
Dave In NL can call Tout Terrain And Pinion On The Phone.. Rumor is some Builders manage a Belt Drive with that Mid drive tranny.
Glad the Gold And Diamond mines are working out well.

Koga can supply a frame for this Pinion. At the Koga Signature site you can pick and choose the components you want (from their list).
I tried to marry up an aluminum frame to the Pinion but that wasn't possible, I was forced to choose a steel frame. I'm guessing at the moment there's only one frame being offered by Koga (and with 29" wheels).
Koga offers the Pinion with the gates belt. I built my own Koga Signature Pinion-Gates bike at Koga's site and the price came to around €4700. That's a lot of money.

Koga dropped shipping across the Pond to the US, Long ago .. we get most bikes from The Pacific Rim.
I think their Frames Still ship Taipei to Rotterdam.
then containers get trucked to their assembly shops in the North.
Peter has the Tout Terrain and Schmidt distribution Nailed down .. exclusive rights..

I was in error regarding the frame for the Pinion offered by Koga, it's aluminum not steel ... and the Pinion costs €2800 (from the Koga Signature site).

so the Pinion gear box [and rear hub?] alone, about double the R'off Hub?
FWIW , I Got my Koga WTR, whole bike, for $2K, (3rd hand shipped from N.C.) then sorted out small things that needed attention
Anodizing on the rims were not even scuffed up.. by the Brake pads .

That price also included the Gates belt.
When you construct a bike from scratch at Koga's Signature site, you're given the price and weight.
I like the idea of the weight in the center of the bike. I wonder if that's something Rohloff might consider in the future.
There have been a few times when I unexpectedly did a wheelie and that was because of the weight distribution. I'm also sure I was on a slight incline starting from a dead stop ... also probably in a lower gear than I should have used

Builders already have used the Rohloff hub as a mid Drive,, there the final drive sprocket is fitted instead of the brake disc.
and the final drive is to the Left end of the rear wheel..
6Pounds.. Steel is what it is.. durable but has a specific Mass.
Pinion seems its more like motorcycle transmissions .. gears on shafts rather than planetaries [R'off uses 4]
Titanium is not so good for gears making . (exception: Cost No Object things [Aerospace, Weapons] made from the Taxpayer's coffers. )
so you Going for one Dave ? got pictures ? headed up there to ride it Home?

fietsbob, I ran the numbers through the Koga Signature form a few times and came up with a bike that cost close to €5000 and weighed around 16kg. Both numbers are too high for my taste ... and my wallet.
I do like the idea of 18 speeds with the gear box centrally located. It's an excellent idea.
I would be happier if my 14 speed Rohloff were also centrally positioned.
We live in interesting times.

The G-Boxx2 is another option in a 7spd internal...pretty cool, but geard more towards freeride MTB, and pretty weighty yet, at 4400gm (incl. crank).
For example:

I think the main purpose that they serve is the Hardcore off road set, as the removal of any but the minimal mass in the wheels
Benefits the lowering of Un-spring Weight in the suslended wheel for fast riding over really rough terrain coming down off cliffs and such
I think the transmissions in FIM Moto GP 50~125 cc class road racing bikes have even more gears
