Thanks.
It's just a snapshot of my usual walking schedule. 5 or more days a week, and mostly transportational.

Hiking gear is another topic. I use my Garmin 500 for hiking as well. Insulated water bottles are the same as in riding. Electrolyte tablets same too. When hiking in places away from cell towers, I use SPOT. REI is the store where I buy the trail shoes, Solomon. Back packs, rain gear too.
Lots of books on hiking trails and some trails are very technical. Sometimes we use trekking poles. While some spouses do not like bike riding, they seem to like hiking or at least day hikes much better.
I cannot see that much connection between chi goong and chi running. Seems to be a fad thing: something old, something new, something borrowed. Even tai chi would be a stretch. Just too different than walking.
The bad thing about hiking is the descent. It hurts the knees with constant jarring.

My first career is hiking. Backpacking, in the mountains. It's a great cardio exercise, in addition to the enjoyment of being out of doors. However, since there are no mountains within about 600 miles of where I live, I bike to stay fit and keep the endorphins humming in my head.
So walking, or hiking, is definitely up there with cycling.

I love walking (especially at night) because it is as close as one can come to being a disembodied spirit! No equipment; nothing to have to think about; you can just float along, enjoying the environment, and let your mind completely wander. Bliss! And sometimes, it just feels so comforting!

There is a connection between hiking (walking) and cycling. As cyclists of various types, I think we have a consensus on that.
But first hiking and walking. I consider walking as a thing we all do as long as we're not yet in a wheelchair. But hiking is even more specific and that is walking taken up to a higher level.
This could be "Hiking as a Second Language" or better yet "Hiking as a Second Activity". Let's drop any remote connection to ESL because there's no language barrier to overcome.

I'm sure I mentioned this in an earlier post ...
Personally I would like to see a sub-forum or sticky thread or something for other sports in general.
Many of us do more than just cycling, and of course, if we're active, we improve our fitness level which helps cycling ... so it's all vaguely related to cycling.
In fact, I know avid cyclists who cycle long distances over the summer ... and then switch to cross country skiing in the winter. One's main focus is cross country skiing, and he just cycles long distances in the summer to keep in shape for the cross country skiing. I know others who do a Super Randonneur series at the beginning of the season (most of those series are pretty much finished by early June) and then focus on triathlon for the rest of the year. And lots of us like to mix it up with a variety of sports etc. so that we don't burn out, and so that we work different muscles.

A suggestion ... it is possible that walking may garner little interest, but "Our Other Sports and Hobbies" threads do keep popping up and I discover that we all have an interest in a variety of sports. And many of us do a variety of things to get a good overall workout, to cross-train, and to take a little break from cycling so we don't get burned out.
Perhaps instead of just a walking sub-forum, it could be a sub-forum for sports we participate in other than cycling. So it would include, for example, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, going to the gym and working out, rock climbing, hiking, walking, etc. etc. Different threads for different sports.

Maybe the new subforum could be called "Cross-Training" ... and would include all the exercise/sports things we do as cross-training, or to take a break from the bicycle for a bit so we don't overtrain, or just because we like doing a variety of things.
There Rowan and I could talk about our attempt at using our surf skis on the weekend The surf was big enough that it was almost like being on a kayak-style rowing machine. Good upper body workout ... my biceps and shoulders are still recovering.

Not only that, but all the advertising banners would now take on a directional shift. This would increase revenue to the owners of this site.

Last Weekend
Friday -- walked 5 km ... commuting.
Saturday -- hiked 5 km ... 4 km along a lake in the middle of Tasmania + 1 km around the area where we stayed.
Sunday -- cycled 6.5 km in the snow on mountain bikes on snow-covered roads + snowshoe'd for about 40 min in two different locations.

A different take on "Walking as a Second Language".
I had a head injury (riding) many years ago. Serious enough that I had no memory of that day, little of recent weeks and much of my early years were effectively in DOS computer-like directories that didn't show with the DIR command. Many of my learned physical skills related to my right side were lost and would have to be re-learned from scratch.
Three weeks later, I walked unsteadily out of the hospital. Four days later I went to the local hospital for physical therapy, mostly relating to walking skills. When the session was over I asked if I could ride the exercycle in the next room. Within 10 minutes, I was spinning the pedals at race speed. Come completely naturally to me and was the first activity of any sort that did. Up until that moment, everything I did was new, unfamiliar and challenging. Suddenly I was in a place completely familiar.
So - walking as a second language? For me, yeah!

Last week ... 23.5 km walking. That's better. And that brought me to 725 km of walking for the year.
Plus I climbed the most stairs in a week I've ever done ... 135 flights. The ol' quads were aching a bit by Friday.

Plus, since the beginning of September, I've climbed over 700 flights of stairs.

slow old man here
I have atrial fibrillation so I am always short winded. I sound like a steam engine when walking but it's important to me to keep the aerobics up. If I sat for too long I'd never get back on my feet. Because of my age (84) I also have trouble getting my feet to go faster than a trudge. Slow but steady may not win the race but I get there eventually. If I really give out there is always the bus to get home. Here in San Diego you are almost never more than half a mile from a bus or trolley stop. Any old bus will do. Once you're on one you can always swap busses till you get to the route that takes you home. As a senior I can ride the bus and trolley all month for $18.
Sometimes I have to force myself to get out but if I stopped; well it's a slippery slope. I vary between trudging along and pumping my trike depending on my mood.

Just ran across this thread - I sorta took this concept of 'walking to improve your life' to the extreme. This past summer, as a Forest Service wilderness ranger, backpacked 30 - 40 miles per week (4 days per week) in the Cascade Mts. Lost 20 lbs and made my cycling much more fun. Yeah, I cycled far fewer miles while recovering from the backpacking trips. Age = 64.

MUCH better than I am doing right now!
I have a half marathon in November, a marathon in the beginning of January and a half marathon 2 weeks after the marathon. All I've walked this week has been 7 miles.

How far is that on a bike?
More seriously, while I can ride forever walking any real distance literally pains me. And (ex-runner) running is out of the question. Back issues.

Heh, I'm just the opposite- I can walk forever and it doesn't phase me....but riding (mostly the hills) takes it's toll on me. I never could run. (Well, maybe when I was eight...)

Never, I despise walking. Hiking is ok, but anything else.. bleh.
The scenery changes too slowly, it get's boring fast.
But i'm part of a generation that needs to be entertained 24/7
