I may have been exaggerating a bit there I'm sure I've aired them up more than twice lol

I always laugh at ignorant comments like that. Trek FX 7.0 [https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes...ss/fx/7_0_fx/] has crappy Shimano Tourney derailleurs, 7-speed shifters, and steal non-replaceable chainrings as the current Scwhinn Tourist (while paying $180 more). So just how will a Trek give you great components and be better?

if you want to compare used, I paid $100 on craigslist (vs. your $200) for my 2010 Schwinn Tourist with better Shimano 8-speed shifters and Alivio derailleurs than the Trek FX 7.0 (and FX 7.1). I haven't destroyed the frame after 1,200 miles (so says Strava); while pulling the Burley 3rd-wheel tandem for 500 miles, grocery shopping trailer, commuting on the dirt & gravel Bay Trail, winter rain commuting, etc... Don't have to worry myself to death that it will get stolen when shopping like my Stevens Super Prestige CX or Bianchi Cross Concept or S-Works E5 would.

The Schwinn Tourist is a fine reliable, sturdy utility/commute bike if someone doesn't have the $$ to spend on a nicer ride.

Consider that your son will get twice the exercise he would be getting if you actually bought him a $5000 road bike

Why, oh why, bring back a thread that died over two years ago?

Here here... I have a cheap Schwinn network 3.0. The tourney stuff isn't that bad, actually it's been excellent front and back as well as the rest of the bike. Yes, the bike is heavy and I get no respect but the bike cost me $160 and I don't care if it's stolen or gets scratched. I took mine to the LBS and in anticipation of being laughed at I made a joke out of the tourney RD and the owner of the shop said "actually the tourney is a workhorse and rarely fails" If anything I'd upgrade the wheels. That's why it went to the LBS.... for trueing.

There are big box store Schwinns. Meh

Then there are the Signature Line Schwinns sold by bike dealers. They are premium quality Schwinns.

I highly recommend the latter. They're a lot of bike for the money.
