new in upstate NY
Hi,
I'm new here, former Brooklynite transplanted to rural upstate NY.
I'm returning to school in the fall and would like to commute one way, a 12 mile trip (I'll probably take the bus back home, it is bike-friendly). Being from NY where everyone walks, bikes and takes public transporation, I'm really appalled at the dominance of car culture around here. Everyone in their cars, a high obesity rate, and the sidewalks completely empty of people. And it is scary to me to realize that this is how most of America lives!!!! Anyhow, I'm excited to get back into biking as a mode of transport and overall enjoyment.
See y'all on the boards.

well to be fair...realize that most places aren't as compact and concentrated as nyc. sure, here you can walk from one place to the other and get there... most other places i've lived, walmart is 20 miles from home, and the denny's is 3 miles past that........ sorry, but no one in their right mind would walk 24 miles to go to dennys.

are you in Rochester by any chance?
I, too, moved to upstate New York from much more bike-friendly cities. I wonder if we are going to the same college? I am at RIT, live twelve miles from there and would like to ride. But if you are going there be aware there is a rough patch near the end where you must ride on a highway. U of R is much better commute by bike..
anyway, happy summer and pleased to meet you.
