Former messenger/new commuter checking in
I got out of school and wanted to do something fun so I moved west and worked as a messenger in SF for a while (Pelican Delivery). Had a blast but knew I needed a real job eventually so I got one. Started riding a lot less but still kept up with it...did some triathlons, tried commuting (on the road/racing bike) a couple times, but time and the distance weren't working for me.
Now I live 6.5 miles from work and commuting bike is a reality. Driving my truck to and fro was getting silly, and riding my motorcycle on the 45 mph roads was really overkill, like swatting at flies with a sledge-hammer, so I picked up a bike solely for commuting. I was thinking about picking up a scooter, but the bike is much cheaper, no insurance required, and I get even better gas mileage with it.

I picked up a Trek/Gary Fisher Monona (pic in the commuter bike pic thread). It was really too good to be true. Went in to LBS (where I had purchased before) let them know what I was looking for and there it was...right size, seat at the right height, rack/bag/panniers installed...just perfect. Took it for a test spin and everything was just right.
Held off on getting pedals for now; I want to see how I like it with just regular shoes. Oh, and I just broke my computer pick-up taking it off my other bike, so I guess I need a new one.
What they hey...here's a pic so you don't have to search for it in another thread.
