You can probably spend anywhere from $40 to $140 on road biking shorts. I just got a pair of Garneau Fit Sensor 2 shorts, they're mid line for Garneau, but I'm pretty happy with them.

Along with finding shorts that have a good chamois in them I would also recommend using a balm. It helps on longer rides or when your delicate area is not used to those first few rides in the saddle. Chamois Butter is a good start.
