I think the statement was just a general "bikes are cool" message. I remember they also asked their fans to bike to the various gigs. There were pictures in the media and I'm pretty sure I posted one here. As for next time, they were pretty emphatic that there won't be a next time. In fact, I seem to remember that they cut the bike tour a little short, or at least quit with the piano. Who could blame them?
And it might be easier to bike 10 miles with a piano on a trailer than to get it up five flights of stairs in Chicago...

I helped move a piano once, up two flights of stairs, around a corner, and down a hallway. Never again, also you need more than two people to have that kind of fun.

Guys guys.. moving blows bigtime and we all know it.
The idea of a bunch a people dragging a piano outside only to take it down the street by bicycle on a bike trailer is just stupid. However, it's awesome if done by college students so in that case I would look forward to the Youtube video.

Nice video. It shows that the cargo bike can be practical as well a fun and challenging.
Moving the bathtub a few blocks on narrow streets was probably easier with the bike than it would have been with a truck. The sofa move went well also, with one worker pedaling and the other riding on the couch itself. It certainly looked easier and safer than moving a couch on the roof of a car, or even in a compact pickup truck. The three little kids looked comfortable in the cargo box--I assume there were air holes.
The piano move was the only real failure, IMO. I cringed to see the way they were mistreating both the bike and the piano. People who are that dumb probably should stick with either driving a truck or playing the harmonica!

In short, that thing was doomed prior to any "mistreatment". It's final function was to promote a trike company on a very small scale via the internet.
As for the tricycle, I think it was smooth marketing on the Haley ppl's part to show that you can "mistreat" their product with a massively heavy piece of garbage and it won't blink. The message is, you can put the thing thru a lot of abuse with confidence; even if you can't move the piano, you also won't kill your Haley.
(That's the point of the video, anyway. I'm not sure I agree. I feel confident that I can at least maim a Haley, if I'm not careful. I still want one pretty bad, though.)

I like this forum and learn a lot, it does take some sorting out of the cars vs bikes and all the graphs and stats...lol
My Dad uses an old bike cart at his farm to move stuff around (by hand). It's amazing the stuff he moves,
The cart and his skid loader is all he needs.
Looking for a used cart at goodwill.....

The piano move was certainly a failure, in regards to the ease/safety factor. OTOH, we're talking about the mistreatment of a thing doomed for a landfill anyway. If you've ever worked in the moving/antiques/estate sale world, you'd know that a few pianos are actually worth real money, but the rest become a liability as soon as the original owner buys them. I briefly worked with a fella named Jules who made his living from moving, buying, and selling old crap. He did very well overall, despite debilitating character flaws and business tendencies that contradicted most folks' intuition. If someone called about selling him a piano, he'd immediately bark "how much would I give you? How much are you going to pay me to get it out of your hair?" For moving quotes, he'd automatically double the cost if there was a piano involved.

I haven't moved a piano or fish tank by bike, but I have transported an old CRT iMac computer by bike. I put the computer in a hockey equipment duffel bag, put that on my back and pedalled away. I had to transport it just a few kilometres, so the distance wasn't too bad. Still, by the time I reached my destination, my back was sore.

A few years ago, a band did a bicycle tour of several Michigan cities. They hauled a piano by bike several hundred miles between the cities. IIRC, they had two or three bikes hooked up to haul the piano on a trailer. One guy would even play the piano as it was hauled behind the bikes. I think the idea was for fans to help out with the tour.

A harmonica player can't play notes as fast as a guitarist. A clarinet player can play that fast but he can't play more than one note at a time whereas a harmonica player can play chords if he is using a diatonic model. Blues and Marine Band models of harmonicas use the three notes of a chord repeated across the ten hole blow section. When they inhale the other notes of the scale are played. This is the design of a diatonic harmonica. The downside of a harmonica is they are stuck in one key. Players must pull out different harmonicas for each key. Guitarists can play them all. Then again guitars can't fit into a pocket.

Who helped the pianist handle and move the piano on/off the bike, an accompanying crew on other bikes or perhaps a motorized vehicle? Maybe the piano remained in the bicycle fixture the entire trip and didn't get taken off for impromptu concerts in fields of flowers.
A few months after seeing his rig in Seville, I toured the coast of Portugal. I was staying in room above a sordid back street tavern in a small town and the owner mentioned that the piano man had stayed there, too. It had taken me about an hour to find the joint as there was no sign out front or anything else that would indicate that there were rooms to rent there, and I had had to ask people in the street where I could find the cheapest room in town, so I imagine he was travelling on a rather tight budget, too.
