Did my very first century this past weekend from Washington, NC to Nags Head, NC on this. It's a Mongoose trail bike, that I did a bunch of mods to. Road tires, more comfy saddle, upgraded shifters, and a few other things. Basically turned it into a thicker framed commuter bike. My buddy and I did this ride as a gift to my daughter to show her anything is possible, and also to raise money and awareness for Stand Against Suicide. It was a great experience, and very cool for us to show people you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on a space age bike to pull of a century!

Recently got this and I'll try it on a long ride next year- but it's really a TT bike- a lot faster than the Lightning.

I just finished my first century (about 102 miles, to be specific) yesterday, on my Trek 520. I rode from my apartment in east Cincinnati up along a scenic and winding route to my parents' house up in Beavercreek, OH. I did have to make a detour over to Centerville, OH on the way, to stop at JuneBug's Cupcakes, on account of undeniable deliciousness. 
It was slightly uphill nearly all the way, so I can't claim any great speed or time records (but that's not the point, is it?), but the route was mostly along the Little Miami Scenic Trail and was quite pleasant.

I got new cables and housing for it, too, just haven't put it all on yet.
My wife has a Schwinn comfort bike I paid 30 dollars for at the flea mkt. I've gone over it good, mechanically, and would ride it 100 miles if I wanted to.

Did first century on my Rivendell Sam Hillborne on Oct. 5th this year at the Seagull Century in Maryland.

My Traitor Ruben. Just put together by a friendly shop last week. This weekend rode a 100 miler in the wind. She's a beautiful bike. A bit heavy at 25 lbs., but rides sooo smoothly.

Sure! The stem in the pic is 110mm and (I believe) +/-17 degrees (might be 25... traded that stem and my fork and have a different setup on the bike now). I'm guessing you'll need a quill stem for your bike? Have you checked out any bike shops? Often they'll have a selection of stems to choose from.

Thanks for the info on the stem. My bike shot didn't have anything in stock that would work, and their supplier has them on back order. I'll see if they can find me something like this.

Rode my first Century around Wellington New Zealand on a 15 year old Carlton that was too big for me. It was my fathers and the only bike I could get my hand on as a late teen. Before having kids I did three centuries on a 1984 Celo Europa. I got this out again and my goal is to ride at least one century next year on the East coast. Still have to decide which one. Training inside over Winter and trying to lose some pounds so I can improve on the hills.

That is a rather aggesive LD bike. I can't imagine holding that position all day...... shoot, I could hardly move after cross fl on my clubman.

People credit Boone Lennon with "inventing" aerobars in 1987 for time trials and triathletes, but they actually were first used by ultra-endurance riders several years before. Jim Elliot used them in the 1984 RAAM, and Pete Penseyres actually won RAAM in 1986 with them. I believe they were intended primarily to enhance comfort for long distances (they were not nearly as low as is common today) and the improved aerodynamics were actually a pleasant side-effect.

WOW that saddle is slammed forward! Do you have very short femurs? You ride a hell of a lot more than I do, so I'm not questioning your set-up or your comfort level, just curious!
