Deore XT765 disc hubs -- how compatible?

The newer Shimano XT disc hub, the 765, does not have a 6-bolt flange built onto the hub assy (like the older style, the XT756.) The disc attaches by some other method. Sounds like it is supposed to work really well with newer Shimano disc brake systems for swapping brake rotors between different wheelsets, but how backwards compatible is it? Does anyone happen to know? Reason I'm asking is I want a second set of rims to swap back and forth with my current Deore/Magura setup. BTW, my Deore hubs have the standard 6-bolt flange. I'd just like to know if the New XT hubs will accepts standard rotors, which woulds seem logical.

Raiyn will probably have a better explanation of it, but the 765's have a different way of attaching the rotors. Its called Centerlock, a nice system. You can get adapters, so that you can run centerlock hubs on 6 bolt rotors.

By the way, if you would rather just have regular 6 bolt right as part of the hub, 756's are still readily available. I believe Jenson USA carries them

Thanks. I was just looking at the XT756 hubs on JensonUSA and thinking about that, and what it would cost to build my own set of wheels.... at the bare minimum I'd need to buy the hubs and rims. Since I cannot do the lacing myself, I might just have a shop take care of the spokes. I could then swap the cassette, skewers, and Magura discs and I'd be good to go. But the cost of just the hubs and rims would be, what, $180-190 after tax and shipping? I see a lot of prebuilt wheelsets for the same or less $$ on the Web, but nothing that I'd exactly want.

What got me started on this idea was seeing on the PerformanceUSA site a wheelset with XT756 disc hubs mated to XM321 rims for only $160. Problem is they seem to be a mismatch of finishes, silver hubs and spokes with black rims. I know that color really shouldn't matter to anyone, but lets face it, it does just a bit. I'd really rather have all black. Performance IS selling sets of the new XT765 disc hubs with spokes and XC717 rims (all black) for $220. So maybe it's cheaper overall for me to get those than build my own.... but there's always a chance that I might have problems getting them to work. I'm pretty sure the old 756 hubs would mesh with what I've got on the bike right now.

im a believer in handbuilt wheels myself, i build wheels for myself and most of the folks i ride with. I would spend the extra $ and have them built, if they are well made they will be problem free (assuming you use them for what they are intended for). YOu can find black 717's, 756's and spokes + nipples easily too. ICYCLESUSA is a nice place for spokes (and they have em in black)

By itself it isn't backwards compatible. With the DT Swiss Adapter you're made in the shade.

I'm going to have to reveal my ignorance here. Aren't all wheels hand built---strung together by some human's hands, I mean?

On those adapters, I like the DT system. (I DON'T like that other one, the lop-sided gizmo on JensenUSA.) Sure adds to the cost though... $70 per set, plus tax. I was hoping to buy an extra set of rotors to go on the wheels, but having to buy adapters is making the XT765 idea slip up into the not-sure-I-want-to-spend-the-money area. I'll have to think about it.

Speaking of rotors, here's another question. Does anyone know of an online source for Magura brake rotors? My bike has the Magura Julie brakes, which aren't the sexiest or most popular of the Maguras. I'm wondering if there's a place out there that has deals on them.

It's my position that using the adapters is much better than using the Shi*No riveted rotors. It should be a temporary measure until some of the other companies produce a directly compatible rotor

6 bolt ISO brake rotors are pretty ubiquitous and universal so long as you get the right diameter you'll be fine. It doesn't have to be the same brand

I like the idea of the center lock hubs because you have next to no chance of stripping bolts. Also, the centerlock XT hubs are about 200 grams lighter than the 6 bolt XT hubs, or compared to the Chris King ISO hubs, they are only 80 grams heavier.

DT adapters are about $30 dollars, which I agree is somewhat a waste of money. I have a spare set of XT centerlock hubs and rotors that I didn't use for my disc upgrade. I'm willing to let them go for somewhat cheap. SO if you're interested, PM me...
