i have stumpjumper 2004 w/ 4" travel rear shock, if I buy a longer travel rear shock will this give me more travel or is 4" the most this bike will do?

is the shok a 4in stroke or the rear is 4in travel..... if you go from four to larger travel you may void a warrenty, and stress your frame, crack it and be out of a ride...

Also, besides those. Your frame may not be built for that kind of travel. And won't be able to compress far enough to make the entire range of travel causing odd rub spots etc...

Definately not a good thing to be trying without some experience or someone who know suspension there to assist ...it *may* be possible.

Dont bother buying a new shock. A half inch or so isnt going to make a phenominal difference.

I did hear that the new Stumpys are going to have 130mm travel!

Imagine your frame with no shock in it at all. The maximum travel you can get out of it is the maximum distance which the rear dropout moves (approx). You can only change the shock for another one with the same eye-eye length (so it fits in your frame), and therefore, whilst the travel may change a bit (if the new shock can compress a bit more), I don't think you'll be able to simply 'add a couple of inches' to the rear end of your bike.

Here's something useful. Bike companies put out lots of $$$$ to get the frames working right. Shock eye to eye and stroke so the bike will ride right.So you should fer sure should put a shock on thats about 2" longer than you have, it would make the bike ride awsome.

Yeah. Um. The world doesn't work the way you think, forum newbie. How about you take the advice we give - there's no point in adding more travel anyways. If it only goes 4 inches then you're only gonna get 4 inches. If the shock's travel is 4 inches, and you over kill on it, then you'll destroy your frame. Perhaps your newbie ness puts you in a place to argue. If you want to argue, why don't you just leave the forums? Life's too short to argue (exception: see Raiyn, he has a damn long life).

2nd of all, what made me think this is possible is that Specialized has a 2005 stumpjumper and the frame looks like there were no changes since the 2004 models, the only difference is it has 120mm travel ( vs 100mm on my 2004 ). I suppose I should just take off the shock and find out how much travel I can get, or ask Specialized. My bike shop didn't have a confident answer for me, they were "oh, maybe"

Simply changing the shock will not affect the total travel. You will also need to change the linkage plates as mentioned above. A company called MRP used to have an upgrade kit for older model FSR's. The kit would include a new shock, a new set of linkage plates, and new bearings. It would upgrade the stock 3.5" or 4" travel on a FSR to like 5.5". It wasn't cheap, and if you didn't put a longer fork on as well, it really messed up the geometry.

Last time I found their website, they didn't have any upgrades for anything newer than 2002. Check again.

I don't know the website, you'll have to google it yourself. MRP or Mountain Springs should be key words.

However, it would probably be cheaper and easier to sell your frame and get a newer frame with the amount of travel you want. It'll end up being a better bike, because it was designed to be a 5" travel bike. Not a 4" all jacked up!

BETD also manufactures linkages, similar to the MRP a2 posted. I had one of these on my 98 FSR Pro. It worked as advertised.
