fixing up a 500$ bike..help!!

so my friend asked me to fix up his old 500$ bike..he got it at like Sport Mart or sumthing like that...so he brings it to me and the frames all rusty in spots, flat tires(NO TREDS), MISSING CRANK, and on the side of the missing crank,, the bottom bracket square is starting to have rounded edges..the cassette is completely rusted, just like the chain, and theres no such thing as brakes on this bike...

BASICALLY i neeed the cheapest of everything i just listed and how much they would cost, becuase he said "if its over $450, i'll just buy a new 500$ bike"

also how do i get rid of this horrid rust (theres also little rust speckles all over the handlebar and stem)

thankyou very much, i need as much help as i can get, with prices and part names and such (cheapest!!!)

From the sounds of it I would tell him it will cost $460 to fix it.

Tires - $40 minimum
Tubes - $10
Crankset - Race Face Evolve w/ bb - $115
Cassette - SRAM PG950 (assuming 9 speed) - $25
Chain - SRAM PC69 - $20
Brakes - Avid Single Digit 7 - $50 for the set
Brake levers - Avid FR5 - $20
Cables and housing - $20
Tools to do the work - $100

Total - $400 and he will still have a rusty sport mart bike.

For the handlebar I wouldn't worry about getting rid of the rust. You can get a cheap bar for $15. Same goes for the stem.

www.bikecanada.com

At 20 bucks a steel wheel (laced and everything) you can't go wrong. But you have to give credit card ova the phone, no problems have happened though, my friend used bikecanada.

Should cost you 370 tops (incl tools I think), charge 450 for labour.

Oh yeah, before you even start make sure you can even remove the seatpost from the frame. If it is frozen up forget about it.

Whoa, you can get cheaper tires from Canadian tire. He said cheap. Or bikeroom, they have trailbears for like 10 each I think.
You can go single digit 5, or even worse.
Crankset, find something used off ebay or go dumpster scrounging with a BB/crank puller.

Sorry, was trying to give a quick answer. Basicly the bike just isn't worth fixing up even going by your numbers. I know I wouldn't dump $370 into that bike would you?

Not for this application as I agree it's a lost cause and a new bike would definitely be the answer. BUT, you can get the Single Digit 7 brakes paired with the Speed Dial 7 levers for a combo price of $70 at PricePoint. Definitely a better deal for brakes.

fine steel wool soaked with WD-40 does wonders on rust spots.

I'm amazed at a sport mart bike costing 500 bucks. I have never seen a X-Mart bike approach even 200 bucks.

If it was me, I would Tear the bike apart sand it down, prime and repaint the frame and then add all new parts cheap to come out under budget. Go to www.jensonusa.com for all parts
