no, mines better!

well, my friend just built a bike, and im doing the same, but im just starting it. he's one of those people who always have to be right and have the best or be the best. so heres the story...

i just got my frame, and while i was in the area i got the bike shop there to put in a bottom bracket for me. I just told the guy to give me a bb to fit the truvativ hussefelt crank. so he asks me if the price is good and i say sure, so he installs it. i find out its the truvativ gigapipe team DH. so anyway, he has the same crank as im getting (we like a lot of the same stuff) but his bb is the truvativ howitzer Team DH.

so my question is, which one is actually better? i dont really care, but i just would like to know. in my opinion, mines better, cuz i looked at the specs thing and there are some advantages. it was also more expensive. heres the links to them...

See if ya can get your answers there...I think he 1-upped ya though.

Looks like the Howy has pretty massive external bearings with a chunk'a cromo spindle.

dang, o well, theyre still both nice bb's, and also, my frame is a dark grey, so i think the silver howy would kinda look a little weird... and his frame is black and i think it looks a little stupid. whatever, as long as it wroks right?

Despite your assertions, it is quite obvious that you do care, otherwise you wouldn't be posting this here, would you?;)

As an aside: function then form. Though I admit I have winced when putting a silver part on a bike with mostly black stuff. Oh well.

norco_rider77 08-27-07 10:30 PM

k, i care to see if hes right or not, but not if im right or if i have a better part.

and im goin for a black bike with red details (red spokes would be kinda cool, but i wont bother painting anything)

No need to paint

Do bear in mind that the word "better" must always be used with respect to some set of requirements. To say that one bottom-bracket is "better" than another in any sort of absolute sense is meaningless. In casual conversation there is often an implicit set of requirements that is unspoken, but those requirements exist nonetheless. Sometimes, when people argue about which part is better, they are actually arguing from different sets of requirements. That's when the arguments begin to get entertaining ;).

In your case, it sounds like a good color match might be a requirement. And thus one could argue that the bottom-bracket that you bought is "better" in terms of meeting your requirements than the Howitzer.

Good Post! If I had an applauding emoticon I would give it to you!

Logic and reason has no place in this forum... you have looked at other posts on this forum before, right?

*edit* Should it be have or has there. I always get confused with that.

norco_rider77 08-28-07 06:32 PM

i think its has, but anyway

Dannihilator 08-28-07 06:32 PM

Meh, it's just truvativ.

norco_rider77 08-28-07 06:36 PM

why meh? Truvativ makes awesome components (especially for my budget)

Dannihilator 08-28-07 06:47 PM

If you like parts that will fall apart on you for no apparent reason.

norco_rider77 08-28-07 06:49 PM

ive had Truvativ on my bike since i knew what a bike was (i mean the good stuff) and its never let me down. you must have had a bad experience with them

Dannihilator 08-28-07 06:57 PM

I've had a bunch of their cranks break on me, all at where the pedal spindle threads in, I tend to prefer Race Face or Shimano cranks. With your bb, you might have gotten a better bb. From the last I heard those howitzer bb's tend to fail rather easily.

wethepeople 08-28-07 07:02 PM

I'm with MR. Smashy, Truvativ is for the most part junk. I've broken many of their cranks, and a few of their BB's. The only reason I keep going back is because their stuff is dirt cheap. My price for a Howitzer BB and cranks was $60 and thats the only reason they're on my bike.

cryptid01 08-28-07 07:03 PM

Other than the lack of durability (I kill a giga every year), no complaints.

santiago 08-28-07 07:04 PM

Same thing happened to my Truvativ 5D cranks. The crank arm material on my particular cranks was very soft and the thread got ruined. I was able to get it re-tapped by my LBs but it is not a crank I feel comfortable adding and removing pedals often.

norco_rider77 08-28-07 08:52 PM

o well, i dont ride super hard, i probably give my bike the best beating out of my friends, and i still havent broken any truvativ stuff. also, what do you think of SRAM, rockshox, and avid? since SRAM makes them and truvativ

Dannihilator 08-28-07 09:02 PM

Rock Shox I can tolerate, love my Avid Juicy 7's, and refuse to run a sram deraillieur.

hey smashy why is that. I am the oposite way, because i have had a shimano derailluer litteraly fall apart on me, but sram derailluers will never fall apart, just bend.

also norco go with avid brakes the bb7s are awesome, hook them up with some compressionless cables and they are bomb

DylanTremblay 08-28-07 09:10 PM

SRAM...good, Avid....good, Rockshox...never rode them much, Truvativ...****ty...broke a bunch of BB and one set for cranks from them. But they have a pretty good warrenty so it wasn't that big a deal.

norco_rider77 08-28-07 09:10 PM

im actually planning to get the bb7's :) as for the cables, ill make sure i get those. is there a specific housing that works best too?

mtnbk3000 08-28-07 09:13 PM

i fractured the crank arms(truvativ) on my new P.2 within a month, luckily i decided it would be a good idea to bring the bike to the shop, i would never have checked for the fracture in the cranks arms i figured the bashguard shattering would prevent damage to the cranks. anyways they were warranteed didn't have to pay for the cranks but i had to shell out 90.00 for a bashguard, a new chainring and instalation.
