Sources for Reviews and Recommendations
What sources, be they magazines or on the Internet, would offer reviews and guides to the latest mountain bikes?

The mags usually say nothing but good things about a new bike. MTBR has some unbiased reviews but you do have to wade through some biased ones too. For example, there are some reviews on MTBR that will say something like "I just got X and it's the superist evar!". You can ignore those as there hasn't been enough time for the newness to wear off and a true evaluation to occur. I also mostly ignore the "new" riders as they don't have much experience.

What I really could use is some sort of comprehensive comparison chart of all the 2008 mountain bikes. From there I could wade through and highlight the most promising bikes that meet my specs. I'm savvy enough to recognize overly glowing or trash reviews.
One requirement I have is a ChromeMoly frame. No aluminum, carbon fiber or titanium for me. Another is all Shimano components.

mtbr - but the only really meaningful reviews will always be a year old. Ignore the positive ones, read the negative ones, test ride, take it all with a big pinch of salt and then make your own mind up.
Alternatively, for bike/parts reviews, then either trawling the internet via a google search or, if the bike I'm interested in is on long term review, in DirtRag and Bike magazines I'll read those. Either way I try not to buy without checking form, fit and function first.

I don't think it's as easy as "look at this chart" as bikes are made for different purposes. You might come across an XC chart (such as on MTBR.com) or a Freeride HT chart, but I doubt a chart of ALL 2008 bikes.
Another option is to ask the people here what they would recommend. Explain what you want and how you want it (other than just frame material!). Many people here tend to know what they're talking about... just ignore me!
