I have 160mm rotors, and I would like to go bigger in front. My guess is that I need a new caliper specced for bigger rotor, but I have no idea. Adaptor? thanks

You need to get a new mounting bracket that will move where the caliper is located. Call that place and tell them the brand of your frame and/or fork and the brand of the brakes so they can find exactly the bracket you need. I have had to many headaches with shops giving me a bracket that doesn't work.

Also beware that a bigger rotor will put more stress on you fork, spokes, hub. Be sure you have solid components before you go to big. Also do you have hydros? And what kind of riding do you do?

I have a specialized rockhopper comp disc. Rockshox tora fork, alex double wall eyeleted rims, 32 spoke. And specialized hubs, standard quick release. Avid bb7. I guess you could say I ride xc , not to say I don't hit a few jumps and crazy trails. Since I only weigh 140lbs, I probably don't need more power. It just seems like I have had more powerful rim brakes. (The discs are smooth though!)
I was thinking of getting new pads, a 185mm rotor up front, a hydraulic front caliper, or a combination.

BB7s are a really good brake. I'd say for what you use it for go 8 inch 203 mm and don't look back. Your components should hold up to it. I ran a 8 inch front with some ****ty hayes mechanicals 6 inch rear and I didn't often complain. I have a since upgraded to Juicy 5s and run dual 8 inches but that is cause I'm fat and do downhillish riding. Also you might consider a 7 inch 185mm in the rear just in case that is what a friend runs in his Specialized PItch. Just think of it this way. There is nothing wrong with overkill on brakes. Have you ever heard someone say that their bike stops to fast?

haha, I can't endo at 25 mph. Yeah I was thinking just a 185mm in the front and 160mm in back, 203 seemed like it would just look stupid, but I'll think about it.

Don't use a 203, it's overkill for 98% of people. Your components are nice, but probably not nice enough to use those. Your bike was intended for XC use, not having gigantic rotors stuck on.

How long have you had the BB7s? I ask because I had mine for 2 months and they still weren't as strong as my rim brakes. I tried absolutely everything to get them to work, but they just weren't very strong. Then I got stuck on a trail in a horrible storm with tons of rain. I rode that trail really hard and fast to try to get out of there because tree branches were starting to fall. Lots of mud, water and sand got on my brakes. The next day after they had dried they were running perfectly! I guess they just needed some abuse. They have worked great since.

Just get an adaptor for your BB7, the size rotor you need and you're good.

U nead new breaks, but dnt get hydros becos yur not experiunsd enouf for thm yet. r hydros breaks beter than cable ones.

BFG, do you know what "hydros" are?

Anyway, I probably have 60+ miles in trails and some road too on the bike since I got it this spring. No real rough conditions though.

Would a set of pads from kool stop or another company other than avid make a difference?

One more question, do I have to get the same style of rotor I had before (cleansweep) or can I get "roundagons?" They look pretty rad.

style of rotor doesn't matter. Before you go to all the trouble, tho, some new pads (front and back) might be all you need to make the brakes work. Most people feel that BB7's are the best cable disk brake you can buy. They should be more than enough even at the present rotor size. I'd try the new pads with whatever the recommended break-in procedure is before upgrading the rotor size.

I have BB7's on my Bullit 6"rear/7"front and BB5's on my Hardtail 6"rear/8"front and I have had 0 stopping power issues. They don't feel as good as a nice set of hydros but they do the job.


I don't think BFG even owns a bike The last pics he posted up I pretty sure he was running training wheels.
