need help? convincing parents on bike
I absolutly love DH, and finally have found the perfect bike in my price range. The 2004 Norco 4x4. Its the perfect bike for me. The bike is $1,300 at River City Bikes in Portland, OR. I have $4,000 saved up, and if I didn't spend much money before I graduated I would have about $5,500. I do not yet have my car, but I am not buying anything expensive. If I buy this bike, it will leave me with $2,700. After I buy a car I should have about $1,800 if even that much gone. Then insurance will be payed via pay checks I get weekly instead of out of my account, and I should be able to keep a little out of my check to put in my bank account so that when I move out I will have about $2,000 in my account just in case something goes wrong. If I wait till I get out on my own to buy this bike, then I will be screwed becuase I might need that money for something else. I would rather buy it now, and then build up my account. But my Dad wants me to wait?? I don't understand why either. I have to wait probably three years until I can get the bike I am dreaming of and be able to do what I love doing. Help me come up with a good reason to get this bike now...
I am so tired of riding a Cannondale F300 on DH. I am desperate. The bike breaks everytime I go...

what kind of dh, because if its just fast and swoopy that bike would do fine, but if its rough with big drops, i might consiter a different bike.

I am sorry to say this man, but a car is a money pit. A $2000 dollar car is very likely to require a LOT of maintaince and repairs. For example, my first car, an 87 Supra was $1500 to buy. It was another $1500 to get it on the road. My current car requires about $2000 /year for regular maintainance.
I think your dad is right about budgeting. People in general are never satisfied with material possesssions. Sometimes it is much better to wait it out. For example, when you work full time at a good job, it will be very easy for you to afford a much better bike.

You already have a job? Maybe you can set up and use a different savings account, for only the bike?
I have a part-time job, and I won't be moving away for about 2 years, but I'd like to get a car next year, and I don't really have much savings, so I'll have to do something similar, save up money with one specific thing in mind.

In any case, I love ridin' my F700 DH(and uphill for that matter), but I definitely feel your pain. I wouldn't even ride a late model F300 off-road, much less DH. Don't know much about DH-specific bikes and even less about Norco, but good luck!
P.S. Just a thought, but can you trade in the F300 towards a FS bike somewhere. I know that at least one of the two LBS's around here do trade-ins.

Cuase I love rally racing, but I am going to have to wait before I can start that. DH is about the only thing I can do right now. I am into to many different things right now.

Anyway I am going to wait on buying the bike I have really thought about it.
I don't want to use the F300 to much anymore. The rear wheel was bent and it was rubbing into the frame. I didn't realize how easily aluminum is to ware away. There isn't big drops, but there is huge rocks that fly up into spokes and bend things. I am afraid if this happens agian then it will just eat through the frame then I can't do anything with the bike.
