how to swap out a fork?

I"m about to pick up a GT Timberline for a friend who would like a non-suspension front fork. The GT is a 20" frame and I've got a fork from an old Trek 800 that I could use for the GT (which has an fs fork) but the Trek frame is 19". How much smaller would the fork on the trek be and do you have to have frames exactly the same size in order to swap out front forks? thanks!

the head-tubes should be close. Its not hard, so its worth a try. Check out the parktool site, it has a step by step. Good luck.
