2010 GT Avalanche vs. 2009 Specialized Hardrock sport

Here is the deal. I had a Hardrock sport non-disk model. I got it new for $450 two years ago and sold it after less than a year because I didn't like it. I thought it was heavy and shifted slow. The shock was not good in my opinion but better than no shock I guess. I bent the seat going over a small bump and that was annoying.

I sold it at a big loss and bought a 1990s GT rigid cro-mo bike off CL (Ambush IIRC) to get by with for a while. I paid like 60 for the old GT and it has been okay. I just ordered a 2010 GT Avalanche 2.0 and I should have it Friday. From the specs it looks like a better bike than the Hardrock. It is reasonable to expect a big step up in ride and quality over the Hardrock?
